YLT for FF

Posted about 2 years ago

(Also known as a post on songs you've likely heard before but maybe not.)

Change is good, and then there's Yo La Tengo repeating genius through six albums in thirteen years, with the same producer, on the same label (Hooray, Matador). Some were better than others but not one's been less than marvelous since Painful in 1993, nor inconsistent.

When I first heard the latest album, Popular Songs, I got right away why it is so titled. It is a different record. It's got funk, horns, organ, Chicago soul/jazz composer and bassist Richard Evans, and more upbeat-ness than my best lo-fi rock poker face can handle. The band's soundtrack stuff since the 2k's has much to do with this expansion. I wouldn't call it the sound of a band growing old, or evolving, because the band had been doing that all along. I think it is them getting to a point that usually begs the use of words like "seasoned", in which case they simply took the leap from weird to wise without the awkwardness in between. I should have known it by the relatively calm tenth album, Summer Sun: Popular Songs is also Yo La Tengo moving on, inevitably.

So okay, Yo La Tengo, I am trying to move on with you. We will always have Saturday, the song and the MOG state, but surely we can do Friday.

Watch out for ta-da-dat's and ooh-ooh's...

Periodically Triple or Double

I don't have to make it rain but I'd never argue with improving the view.

And is this Euro-twee and jazzy I hear...?

I'm on My Way

Sun shines through the window.
There's nothing I can do.
I tried to be brooding in the dark but it all fell through.

I've only heard a song here or there & not heard a full album of theirs. Obviously I wasn't moved by those few songs I heard previously to check them out further.

I am liking Triple or Double though w/it's nice laid back groove(I listened to the whole thing too which is unusual for me). Euro-twee & jazz on the 2nd one? Maybe jazz but don't hear twee imo.

You Knoe I'm a huge YLT fan., willing to follow them anywhere.  This may seem like a deparure for them...but really its a logical step.  Their music has always had a celebratory air to it.

Aug, i've loved every single album since '93 although neither of the above songs sounds similar to those albums. in hindsight, twee may be a stretch - i was thinking of Siesta Records, their bands tend to be faintly jazzy. Triple is definitely a strong track but it saddens me to say i don't feel strongly for the album.

Jeff! i like it, but this is the first time since Painful that i'm not crazy about a YLT album. is it me??? i get that they've taken the next step, i'm happy they have, i also realize the album exhibits new depths and breadth ... but at the end of the day, i haven't enjoyed listening very much. i'm bothered, and i care 'cuz you know i'm also a huge fan. [sigh]

Kevin, i love that album. well, there, i've said it - i am finding it harder to love this new one as much. the next time i run into you in MOG, i will totally ask you what you think of it, but no pressure. :D

Well, to tell you the truth one of the reasons I have not gotten it yet was because of I Not Afraid of You and I Will......I was not too fond of that album at first but now it has grown on me. I am guessing this album will do the same when i get it which may be tonight. I do know that I will be picking up the new gorillaz today and that alone makes me smile.

Ah.  A great band from the town of my former residence.

Do have to admit, If It's True from Popular Songs has some 4 Tops influence to it. Actually, I thought it was a cover song/album.  Popular Songs spans various inflenences from different eras.

Not a big fan of their jams, but they are perfection on Tom Courteny.

Who did they back a couple years ago on The Late Show w/ Conan O'Brien?  I want to say She & Him.

Kev, ooh, Gorillaz, i am excited along with you! yeah, i am still waiting for this new one to grow on me. i mean, i like it and i want to love it.

dem, hah. first one's funkay, works with latte. ;d

Eric, too true, 4 Tops right from the intro. the range of influences is one of the best things about the album.

incidentally, Tom Courtenay _is_ the song that made me go from liking YLT to being a fan. i kept going back to Electr-O-Pura and thinking it's going to eat up Popular Songs any day.

    uh-huh. She & Him.
