1 of 2 on Gui Boratto: Bomb the Bass
-
Artist:
Mark Lanegan's mentholated-in-a-barrel vocals combined with Gui Boratto's scrape-the-floor breakbeats make this a post-grunge post-techno soundtrack for a still Tuesday. Wait for it at the 2:19 mark. (I know I am prefixing "post" to everything. It's a phase.)
Black River (ft. Mark Lanegan) (Gui Boratto Remix) : from the Black River CD single
Say what you will but DJ and music producer Tim Simenon a.k.a. Bomb the Bass was right there in the thick of the techno/dance/club scene in London in the mid-Eighties, and he's still going at it decades later. I thought I'd mention that the followup to his superstarred quasi-comeback, Future Chaos from 2008, will be out in March, still on Studio !K7 and his own Electric Tones label, and it seems exciting on two counts.
1- Gui Boratto co-produces the new album, called Back to Light, which suggests where the sound's at. What was exciting about Future Chaos, while not a great record exactly, was it certified Simenon's diversion to minimal electronic music. It would also be the first time -on record, anyway- any track of Simenon's was reworked by Boratto, who is known coincidentally for his minimal techno/house remixes.
2- Martin Gore on synthesizers features in the final track, Milakia. Along with favorite vocalist (and keyboardist) Paul Conboy, collaborators include Kelley Polar, Richard Davis, and The Battle of Land and Sea (say, weren't these guys Moggers at one point?). Promotional videos for the album tracks Boy Girl and The Infinites may be streamed from, like, everywhere, courtesy of !K7.

GAH! They finally put Bomb the Bass on MOG! Thats review I have been waiting to do for one of their albums.
Never mind, they only have the new one.... bummer.
see that? tha's me, grinning ear to ear like the Cheshire cat. While Black River might single handedly bring a classic sound back to the singles chart, Butterfinger's "I play tetris in my eyelids" technattitude may be best new way to lose sleep. Bombin'!
sidebar: look at all those "B"s swarming up there...
Yeah, what Scot said.
On a similar note, big ups to Tim Simenon for helping resurrect Depeche Mode in the late 90's, when I thought they were dead to rights.
I guess I like the second one better, with its squiggles...although the minimalism of number one is cool too.
The bass on both bump brilliantly.
Bumping brilliantly...Yes!
hmmmmmmm.
'Mark Lanegan's mentholated-in-a-barrel vocals . . .', I'm not entirely sure what that means but it sure sounds fascinating since you have a great way w/words, haha. I like the track alot & Lanegan's voice adds some interesting texture to the song w/his gravelly baritone.
The 2nd song sounds so much like a Basement Jaxx track which is a huge complement since I love BJ(erm, what did I just say there? hehe).
Oh, I love this. A good way to start the Wired Wednesday. I know Gui Boratto, but didn't hear from the other guys so far. I think this is the first post on electronic music since (and that I saw) since ages - that I didn't write myself (but I was away for quite a while ... ).
Well done.
Ghost, what was that? there are no BtB albums in the All Access database except the new one? not one of the how many gazillion releases the dude has? gah!
Scott, ooh, "technattitude", your vocabularizing is unstoppable. and yes, the sight of B's swarming up there did not escape me, which is why i love talking to just Moggers.
Dale, aww yeah. i keep thinking Depeche Mode just lost me between ...Faith and Devotion and Ultra, which was only an entire decade almost, but really, it wasn't just me.
Cody, agreed, it's the first song's minimalism that i like, and there isn't much i don't love about Fujiya & Miyagi. even their music videos always rock, including that second song's, which is one of the album highlights.
Beth, ] bump [] bump [] bump [
Jeff, i can not hear the tone of that, so hmmm back atcha.
Aug, hah! funny. i haven't thought about Basement Jaxx for a long time, but when the internet started, mid-'90s, i remember talking about them online.
yes, i like the addition of Lanegan's voice to the song. i think i just meant he sounds like he just ate menthol candy and his voice is coming out of a barrel. i don't know anymore, it made sense for the first 5 minutes. ;d
Hermes, i don't love Gui Boratto but he's alright, he's put out a lot of good music. gosh, you are correct. you and Moggers like oatmeal and dzendvokh had not been so active, and Moggers like ciphermedia and TheBoyFlood, i'm not sure they'll be back. you all are the electroMoggers that i know.
BJ hasn't put out a decent album for quite some time so I'm not surprised you haven't thought about them in a while. I like their albums up until 'Kish Kash', that was the last one I bought.
Aug, that's too bad. I only ever had Remedy and then lost it to a hard drive crash.
Bummer! I think 'Rooty' is my fave album of theirs. I could upload an album or two of theirs on the dark side if you'd like.
I have heard Rooty (borrowed someone else's copy) a very long time ago. As you know, I would love to get those but it's too hard at the mo. (TB&WY took like two weeks and many hours!) I'll add these to my list though for when I have better internet someday. :}
Awww hell, sorry to hear it ii. That takes all the fun out of it when it takes that f'n long to download(then again, I bet it makes you truly appreciate it even more). When you do get a better connection you know who to come to my dearest pink linky. I'll be an uploading fool for you anytime!
Aww thanks, PL dearest. It didn't take the fun out of my listening to TB&WY but it might try my patience if I keep doing it, heh. Anyhow, old Basement Jaxx is something I gladly look forward to, so you betcha I'll bugger you one of these days. ;d
