Sem Parar : Zeep : Nina Miranda & Chris Franck Present: Zeep : 3:25the latest collaboration between real-life partners Nina Miranda and Chris Franck, Zeep did not make as much noise as Smoke City or even Shrift. when the debut album, Nina Miranda & Chris Franck Present: Zeep, came out of the Far Out label last year, reviews were quick to dismiss it as mildly electronicized samba and bossa nova.(a word on most critics: they are often right. their reviews often agree with your own reaction to the first three spins of an album, which are as much as they are willing to spend. of course, a month later, you discover how superficial the review is.)the more time i spend listening to Zeep, the more i am coming to realize it is an enchanting slow burner. the nuances are painfully subtle but they are there. sometimes i equate it to just the idea that, the more you know, the less you are compelled to shout it out.in making the album, the couple were joined by "Mike Lindup, Marcalzinho, Davide Giovannini, Courtney Dennie, Kenny Lynch ['60s English artist of Up on the Roof fame], Marcelo Jeneci da Silva, Mauro Berman, Jason Yarde [Hugh Masekela and Roy Ayres], Tristan Banks, Elina Franck, Diabel Cissokho, Mamadou Sarr, Michael Mondesir, Laurie Lathem, James Stewart, Toni, Thea and Dino Economides, Zé Luis, Nyusta Vanrenen, Davide Mantovani" [from http://www.myspace.com/zeepband]. i picked up somewhere that those names include players from Brazil, Africa, and the UK, and former Level 42, Pat Metheney, and Steve Winwood alumni.i will start slow with a Portuguese bewitcher and get things swaying from there. if you happen by Zeep's MySpace, the track Nature is probably my favorite. i now ask you to listen carefully and submit that you will be merely, fleetingly brushed by enchantment at first listen and that's only fair.Super : Zeep : Nina Miranda & Chris Franck Present: Zeep

  3. Cody B says Crazy Cool,poe.. The first tune has a kind of underlying menace, if that's possible, kinda spooky. I dig. Song 2 freaks the funk with cuteness to spare in that vid. Number 3 might end up being my fave..a little deeper into the funk. Number 4 is probably a better dancer than 2 or 3 and its pretty dope, but I like the more minimal approach of the others.

  4. Bartleby says You've managed to pack so much aural pleasure in one single post it's uncanny... If you don't mind, I'll second what Cody said. Also, Nina Miranda could be singing the phone book I'll still listen to her spellbinding vocals. Merci bien mademoiselle Poe.

  5. scotfree says Have checked the vids, and now have RED DOT ANXIETY 'cause I won't be home 'till late. Very cool on the funk and that first Super one is nicely tailored to the younger set, need more of that. Yeah, Cody, I am lovin' the post-Afri contribution too. Uh, Michael, weren't you just chiding my comment akin to "aural pleasure"? Is that a pin in the voodoo doll, or a trend..? :)

  6. Oatmeal says Thanks for the entertaining post. I have been pretty out of touch with Far Out but I know they put out some great music. My connection does not seem to have the width for the vids, but I like the song.

  7. fistula spume says I'll have to check this out. I loved that last Shrift album and I had no idea there was a Smoke City connection. All are awesome. She has such a lovely voice. Their music is very lulling.

"of course, a month later, you discover how superficial the review is" Ha, ha! Nice punchline! So true, too. I'm guessing that most pro reviewers spend less than a week with an album (and I'm being genrous in that assessment!), and then they rush on to another one to begin the process again. And, pleasant tunes, ta! PS. Where's Scott at?

Well, the boo hoo hoo berries have given me some trouble posting, but I'm getting back up to speed. I'm not gonna ever ask where/how you find this great stuff. I don't wanna spoil the mystery

Cody, song 3 as in Keep An Eye On Love, right? i love that one a whole lot. Nina & Chris were of course preggers in song 4 and had a boy, which explains the extra, exta cuteness in song 2.

Michael, how does a phone book sound like and is it a complicated melody to sing along to? aww Nina would be flattered. glad it was "aurgasmic" for you.

Scott, although my own internet situation sucks, yours bums me as well, but i figure an obsessive-compulsive would welcome the chance to watch all vids first then hear all audio tracks later. ;p

Amiel, my weekend bandwidth can't handle video streaming as well so i only watch the first half of them in those days. :D i've checked up on Far Out on and off, lots of awesome Latin electronic stuff, especially Brazilian, samba, bossa nova.

Sam, i don't have that Shrift album completely but pieces of mp3s, and yeah, i loved them. there's at least two more differently named projects by Nina & Chris tho the names escape me just now. busy couple, huh?

Aug, songs 2, 3, 4 will indeed rock the dance floor in many a Havana-themed night or club, but for the slooww song 1, either Gael Garcia Bernal / Diego Luna asks me or i'm choosing to stay seated with my mojito. ;D

Colin, let me be clear that i was not thinking of you when i wrote that, as i think we've established that you're not a reviewer. ;p i'm also speaking from experience tho - being 22 and getting paid to review music, i think i faked it all except for the records i actually cared for.

"Where's Scott at?" - hahahah, you funny Irishman.

Pat, so could i. we can have a listening party some time. ;d

Scott, that's it, don't spoil the mystery! don't let Fluxy find you!

I am still playing catch up and I am glad I got to this one Ilay. I am aware of Smoke City from MOG (woot) so it is cool for me to already have some familiarity with Nina's wonderful voice.

Mike, glad you got to it, Nina's voice is the bomb and Smoke City are the shiz. (i think they're now defunct tho.)

That is a bummer. It is good to see that she is still in the music biz as her voice is to beautiful to not be heard.
