Neon Neon (Gruff Rhys + Boom Bip)

Posted about 1 year ago
the wait has been a reason for me to wake up and be alive all January: Stainless Style, the collaborative album of Gruff Rhys (alias Super Furry Animals frontman and all-around demigod) and Boom Bip (nee Bryan Hollon, Cincinnati-based hiphop all-around demigod).8 tracks, 30 minutes in length, due in March out of Lex Records. guests include Naeem (Spank Rock), Sean Tillmann (Har Mar Superstar), Fatlip, Yo Majesty, and supposedly Beck.i've heard three tracks. what did i think? i can barely contain myself. i want to gouge my eyes out. please listen to all three.http://www.myspace.com/neonx2on post: Trick for Treat (feat. Spank Rock and Sean Tillmann) (the first up on MySpace, i think)? a hiphop number to blow you away

  1. poebegone says Raquel (the first single, i think) ? clubby, new wave, synthpoppalicious (1:05 minute intro - wait for it...)

  3. Marigold says You only want to gouge your eyeballs out? What about your eardrums? Well, it is not that bad but I am not sure that I get this music at all. I Told Her on Alderaan could totally be a 1985 pop classic today! (whatever that means) on a side note, the first track in the comments did not work for me. I did hear it on their myspace site though.

  4. poebegone says Mike, you're right, Raquel isn't working. i uploaded it a second time, obviously a new mp3 code, and that also didn't work. something's fishy here - of the 3 tracks i uploaded, it's only Raquel that Rhapsody has a sample of - is there a connection? this isn't the first time this happened, i had it with Bettie Serveert's Co-Coward, and that has a sample as well. on a related note, am i the only one who is unforgivingly annoyed that all my uploaded images are being stretched to obesity? i mean, only Amy Winehouse is going to look good in these conditions. maybe Feist, too.

  5. Marigold says I don't know what is going on with the songs in the comments. Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. The picture thing is really getting on my last nerve as well. I hope a fix is on the way.

  10. scotfree says Hey, listened to "Trick For Treat" kind of in passing and I really liked the vocs at the beginning (I'll go back to it). Grooving on "I Told Her on Alderaan" and love it. Sorta of a retro Cars groove (esp guitar sound) and, and - damn it's over! Repeat! Hot stuff poe!!

  11. Bartleby says Neon Neon doubles the pleasure, doesn't it? Quite interesting. I do like the technoid vibe of "Trick for Treat" but I need more to get the full picture. Thanks for reporting from the front line and pre-releases ;)

  12. poebegone says hm, did i screw up on clarity? first be clear then be clever - i can see my writing composition teachers scoffing at me on my thought balloon, or from their graves. let's try that again... Neon Neon is a collaborative band and side-project of Gruff Rhys, who is the frontman & vocalist of Welsh electro-psych-rock group Super Furry Animals, and Boom Bip, who is a hiphop producer, songwriter, artist from Cinci. talks of a debut album from them began last year, and i have been anticipating it since. that album has finally materialized as Stainless Style, to be released by Lex Records. the album is not due out until March but i came to hear three tracks off it online and what i've heard is enough to keep me excited for the album's arrival. there are elements of '80s synth pop new wave and hiphop (i.e. what you'd expect as a good marriage between the two artists). listen to two tracks here and two more on Neon Neon's MySpace page. there. ;d

  14. poebegone says D, i keep missing you, too. see comment above for new improved version of post. i know you love new wave but i don't know how much you love the synth-laden sort. give the songs Raquel and I Told Her On Alderaan a listen, you might like 'em. (; S, retro Cars! groovy. yes, it's pure '80s new wave, that song. 'hot stuff' is correct. truth be told, i haven't heard the Neon Neon songs on MySpace because streaming is a no-no on my sneaky Internet freeloading. different intro, eh? thanks, i'll check it out. everyone is crazy about this Skyline. i must try it some time. M, technoid vibe - luv that! yes, agree, i am reserving judgment until i hear the rest of the album - notice that i didn't use a single superlative up there. ;D i quite like the name - curiously, another new band is called Goodtimes Goodtimes, but i haven't heard their music.

  15. FluxCapacitor says Thanks for this, Ilay - I really like it. I heard one song last year, liked it, but totally forget about the project. I'd be interested to see how this collobaration came about. I heard Gruff djing once and he did drop a lot of good mainstream rap. My intial feeling is that this will do really well for them amongst the kewl kidz... Can't wait to hear the album.

  17. poebegone says Colin! was hoping you'd stumble into this post, wondered what you thought of Mister SFA's side-project. i think Gruff had initially contributed to Boom Bip's latest album? ha ha, the "kewl kidz", eh? bet they're all over the hiphoppier tracks, yo. V, ahoy there, "weaving sub-sonics" is such an awesome way to put it. yeah, i'm really psyched up for the album myself. hope it doesn't disappoint.

  18. christheskins says

The last Gruff thing i got was way back!   the Super Furry's "Rings around the World" He's always been tops for his "pop-culture" references.."Rings" namechecks the "Tetsuo"  movies ,Japanese, darkly comic sci-fi...which i was in to.  I only just caught up with "Stainless Style" through their nomination for the "Mercury Prize"...the performance on the awards show was the clincher with "Told her on Alderaan" segue-waying into "trick for treat" ,with the lovable  Har- Mar squeaking it up and doing a head-stand at one point..."pop" reference for "Stainless Style"  is bizarre..a "concept/tribute" of sorts to "DeLorean" car company originator John DeLorean.. works for me when the music is this good...maybe Gruff is a big "Back to the Future" fan?
