OMG

it's dEUS, not Deus

Posted about 1 year ago
in the nineties, whilst the rest of the world argued over Nirvana vs. The Smashing Pumpkins / Pearl Jam / David Letterman, the people of Belgium argued over dEUS vs. Nirvana. the folk-prog rockers from Antwerp were that big. every band cited them as an influence, every kid who learned to play guitar thanked them for the inspiration, any gigger wished any show affirmed by their attendance. i guess i could vouch for this categorically for having, by a stroke of fate, spent a teensy bit of time in their adorable country at the turn of the decade. ('tis true about the fries and the chocolates.)you have to love Wikipedia for being an encyclopedia that contains a phrase like "a bewildering array of influences" - in reference to the band's - "including Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Big Star, Sonic Youth, Sun Ra and Mingus-style jazz, Leonard Cohen and the Velvet Underground".vocalist (and sometime guitarist) Tom Barman and guitarist (and sometime vocalist) Mauro Pawlowski (from the awesome if lesser-known Evil Superstars) had the classic rivalry such as parodied by Jason Lee and Billy Cruddup in Almost Famous. former bassist Stef Kamil Carlens (the one who got away) went on to form (the awesome if lesser-known) Moondog Jr. and Zita Swoon, and gained his own following. those were the stories told passionately by the fans. i, in the process, came to own all three of dEUS's albums (but not the fourth and latest) and would like to impart some favorite tunes here.on post, the song Roses (a.k.a. For the Roses) from the second album, In a Bar, Under the Sea (1996), produced by Captain Beefheart's Eric Drew Feldman.

  1. poebegone says this song is Hotellounge (Be the Death of Me) from the debut album, Worst Case Scenario (1994). it is probably my favorite dEUS song.

  6. Bartleby says A tight and thorough post full of adolescent reveries and also nostalgia, at least for me. I can't believe it's now over 10 years since I saw them show casing their debut album in Paris... Thanks Poe... PS: For some reason, when I read your log-on name I see pekoe...

  7. scotfree says Nice tunes Poe. Really like how "Roses" builds and builds in intensity. And those crackly guitars in "Hotellounge" were quite unexpected, lots goin on in there.

  8. Marigold says Great post post Ilay. Being a big Smashing Pumpkins guy at the time. I had never heard of dUES. Silly me thinking I was cultured in all things music back in 1991. Gish changed my outlook on music at the time and unfortunately no other music existed at the time....other then Nirvana of course. Sad to say this is my first ever exposure to dUES and for that I am happy and sad. Sad because I had not heard of them sooner, happy because you are the one to show them to me.

  9. poebegone says Lizzie! hugs back, dear. lovely avatar you have there, i can tell your holiday was a blast. indeed. they spell ABBA properly so there's no excuse. Devo though should be DEVO. ;D ocpunkster, too bad you couldn't listen. sometimes it takes a while for a song to buffer and stream, especially when too many moggers are logged in all at once. Bartleby, "pekoe" - that's a first, luv it, and i love orange pekoe tea as well. how cool to have seen them in Paris back then. i went there in 1999 or 2000. anyways i hear dEUS slay live, wish i could've seen that myself.

  10. poebegone says Scott, you're dead-on, as always. many songs have been called intense, but if i will be very strict with what i think the word means, then i give it to that song, certainly in the way it builds up. yeah, it's characteristic of dEUS songs to have some very fleeting layered music going on, and then it's gone before you know it. Mike, aww blush. guess what? Gish was life-changing for me, too, and so was Nevermind. after all the glam and hair metal of the late eighties, i started to lose so much faith in rock. and then i heard those two (along with things like Butthole Surfers, Jesus Lizard, Social Distortion, etc.) and all was well again in the world.

  11. Marigold says Very nice. Gish was and always will be a great record for me. I do not know that has lasted the test of time like the Stone Roses has for me, but I just qued it up while typing this and I have to say it is some serious rock! I really wonder how a band like dUES would have sounded to me back then. I wish I could say. Wow, we have a lot of the same music history from back in those days. Cheers!

  12. poebegone says coolio! i left my Gish in Manila but listened to it just before leaving, after a long, long time n thought sth similar, like i'd forgotten how much it rocked! (M, it's dEUS, not dUES, you great speller you. ;D but never mind, you always rock.)

  14. HelenMarie says Time to pay your dUES to dEUS, MikeG. This is the first I've heard of them too. I'm enjoying the chaos in Roses. (_today_ )

  19. goodmusiconly says So, wait ... should it be nIRVANA? ;) While I've heard about dEUS over the years I haven't heard much of their music until now. I was a Nirvana kid, though I got into them a bit earlier, during the 'Bleach' period; I was one of those who couldn't believe their meteoric rise to fame with the release of 'Nevermind.' It's interesting to hear what was going on on the other side of the world - or at least in Belgium - at that time. I'll be checking this out more, thanks Ilay!

  20. poebegone says eRIN, ;p Nevermind was my introduction to Nirvana but Bleach, which i bought later on, had a more powerful effect on me. i had absolutely no idea about Belgium until i met a Belgian, and equally no idea about dEUS until i met a dEUS fan - incidentally, they're one and the same person, one of the nicest guys i've ever known.
