Oh Astro : Snow Queen

Posted about 1 year ago
seriously, there are many enough married indie rockers to start a revolution, or at least carry the torch of the holy matrimony. Oh Astro is the very marital tandem of Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler based out of Normal, Illinois, albeit with Stefen Robinson aka Yea Big often playing the third wheel.behind the little red dot is track one, Snow Queen, off the debut album Champions of Wonder, out this year from Illegal Art, the followup to the EP Hello World from 2005. (track two, Hello Fuji Boy, samples Lionel Richie's Hello.) btw, no, your player is not broken.all this talk of snow (not where i am) in the last many days in mog made me think of the song (and other things). sending sunshine everyone's way.::. official site; a few more mp3 downloads on the audio page::. 1. FluxCapacitor says Wow, this song is utterly fantastic. For me, it's sort of an indie version of The Field's experiments with house music, in that they're looping the slightest of phrases. Fantastic pick, Ilay, I'm off to dl the other tracks...

  2. FluxCapacitor says The Hello song is terrific, too. And I've just realized that, rather incredibly, The Field also sample Hello, at the very end of A Paw In My Face (from this year's brilliant From Here We Go To Sublime) _Hel-lo?_

  3. scotfree says Hhmmm, you've thawed my icy soul with that one Ilay. Sort of an organic Frippertronics spiced with falsetto-less Sparks, that's a brew that's better than the 6 am coffee I'm sipping. And I love that picture. Investigation shall proceed

  7. fistula spume says Love it. I need it. I want it. Sounds like a lot of things that I can't think of right now. Thanks for posting!

  8. Sturgell says At first I thought that there was something wrong with the recording. Then I realized that it's the style. Far out.

  10. poebegone says yay! we all love Oh Astro. the response to the song is marvelous. well, you guys have access to the album and i don't - so if you end up buying it and feel like sharing, you know what to do. (...Ghostbusters!) FluxC: hey, you are utterly right! it does sound like The Field, and come to think about it, it also does sound a tad Swedish. Colin, i haven't heard A Paw in My Face. also a hello at the end, huh? the strangest coincidence. i wonder if they're married couples, too. scotfree: great description of Frippertronics meets Sparks. i love it when the '70s and '00s meld seamlessly - it is akin to what i'm doing with my Secret Santa mix, i can't get into details yet but i'm so excited. 6 am coffee? boy, 6 am is when i start feeling sleepy and think about going to bed! deadman and walkingthecow: cool for school, yeah. like a fuzzy-eyed mechanical doll running amok. ;D

  11. poebegone says leftoverking and sturgell: ha ha, dial-up. nice one, Jeff. the funny thing is, i did think that at first listen. Adam, it had to be the recording or someone has Parkinson's …whups, the beginnings of a very bad joke. fistula: that is in fact the best and closest to how i feel about their music, Sam - "Sounds like a lot of things that I can't think of right now". emphasis on a very schizo lot. ooh, need and want in the same sentence, you must really like it. ;d ketut: whoah, this post is full of strange coincidences. The Field's hello, and now Laurie Lindeen. before getting to your comment, i was just reading this most enjoyable read - It's Not Phair. lovely blog excerpts on Amazon! oh yeah she counts. (8

  16. FluxCapacitor says The Field - A Paw In My Face A phrase from Hello starts about a minute and a half in, and pays off right at the end.

  17. poebegone says soulrocket: good call on YMCK. (...but what is J-pop without the cuteness? ;d) there is only one song on post, called Snow Queen - follow the red dot. i guess we were talking about a second song, Hello Fuji Boy, which is available as a free DL on their official site (link on post). sunnyd: ow of course! what a major oversight on my part. it should be your avatar up there instead of that Oh Astro photo. you radiate way more sunny sunshine than those silly little flowers and rainbowy colors. ;D

  18. poebegone says fistula: i think i so get get it. =p kristiana: naw don't let this be your cup o' tea – we can't have no jolly cheerful punk rock chick going around mog, for chrissakes. (8 FluxC: like! thanks for the upload. that ending was soo good. it certainly helped calm my nerves while i try/pretend to write about the English Premier League expertly, never mind my personal life-long sports block. dang i hate this part of my job.

  20. poebegone says cool, Mike. repeated listenings get me in a chirpy-quirky mood. :D

  21. HelenMarie says Haha! Speaking of a repeated listen. I was thinking about this song and couldn't resist a revisit and then to find an extra tune inserted by Flux...how sweet! Digging that tune maybe just a tad more for regular listens! "it should be your avatar up there instead of that Oh Astro photo. you radiate way more sunny sunshine than those silly little flowers and rainbowy colors" Hahaha...good one! I certainly take that as a compliment dear, but I will need some extra warmth and sun from you for next week, I'm heading north to the city for the 1st time in a long time and I'm gonna freeze my ass off!!!

  22. poebegone says SD, it is a compliment no doubt. pack an extra-powerful tiara for the freezing cold. (8
