On occasions that call for an exchange of volatile fluids, I know I choose wisely. When a stranger offers to buy me a drink, I decline. It is in my estimation a display of good behavior but it dawned on me the other night that my conduct is fueled by a bad habit. It was a night in which friends brought their friends and so no one in the immediate radius was completely strange. Soon it was plain to me that I was sizing a stranger up for his philosophy rather than his freebie. (He named Ayn Rand so I checked him on dialectics, et cetera.) It transpired that I would expend more than anticipated in the time it took to refuse repeatedly the only type of buzz that's on the table.
My newly recovered conceit called to mind a random line off my head that goes something like this: You think yourself a cut above the company, secretly. Dissatisfied, I went home and crawled under a blanket to wait sunrise out with Roman Coppola's CQ, a bottle of more liquid, and the Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In. I came to a conclusion fairly quickly that this was better than the smell of flowers. I could not help it; I will die with nephews by the bedside.
It would appear there are two ways to listen to Excepter, self-labelled as "a noise-improv musical group" and "an electronic performance group" from Brooklyn. The first is to take it as a curiously tall cocktail of house, post-disco, and avant-garde rock. The second is to buy the manifesto that comes with the music; peruse the photo in comments if so inclined. (Or A: With ease, B: With difficulty.) In the spirit of randomness, those undecided may take a suggestion from a barroom line I just fished out of the internet: Pardon me, do you believe in one-night stands?

Not so coincidentally, Debt Dept. was released last year by Paw Records, label to Animal Collective.
I cannot wait to get home & hear this. A friend here at work read your post over my shoulder........she says you're deep. I told her she has no idea. I told her you were half looney tunes too, LOL.
so, this is what you do at 3 a.m. while waiting for the sunrise? I like this Excepter - they're like Health on massive tranq's...plus it looks like they keep a graphical artist on staff - does he graph while they play??
'bout the only thing I drink any more is vodka, 'cause as you know, "It didn't taste like anything, but it went straight down into my stomach like a sword swallower's sword and made me feel powerful and god-like." don't discount the value and rarity of solitude.
Jeff - Ahahah, funny! Tell your friend 90% looney tunes is what I aim for! I am very pleased to be thought of as loony, you made my day.
You may or may not like the tunage. My honest opinion is that it's polarizing, sometimes resonant and other times bullshit, just like dogma.
Scott - I think you'd like both movies mentioned. I got the vampire one blindly but dachmo put in a good word and I dig it. The other one, I had half-seen before while distracted and knew I had to watch it properly.
I suspected you were quoting another mad woman but I cheated anyway and Googled it. I was horrified by her movified version in the form of Gwyneth Paltrow.
Mrs. Ivylander and I had known each other for months (we were both taken at the time, she worked at my then-girlfriend's office) and were friends, but the first time we were free and dated each other, we slept together. Does that, technically, meet the requirements for a one-night stand? (All the other ones sucked, by the way...)
'You think yourself a cut above the company, secretly.' 'Oh but you are Blanche, you are!' hehe Both songs sound so much like NIN, I can't help but like them.
yes, I remember Dach's comment, so now that's two plugs and a must see. CQ sounds tasty as well...how could I have missed that one? enjoying the read, I'll avoid Gwyneth on your rec :)
Killer tracks! I like the "Higher Ground" blurp there at the end of the first track. What's the bumper sticker I saw(?)... my karma ran over my dogma, yeah that's it.
You are on a roll. Loving your writing these days. Keep it up.
Bill (Or should I say, Wild Bill?) - Now, that sounds like a love story. I hearken back to a number of occasions I have fallen in love with someone who was taken, or while I was taken. Excuse me while I make like Buzzcocks and sing, Ever fallen in love, in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with?
Aug - Why, that is a sly association you've made, I love it, and from a much hipper piece of cinema compared. In the interest of full disclosure, I stole (and worse, paraphrased) the line from a movie called Becoming Jane by Julian Jarrold. There is a heap of nonsense swimming in my head.
Hey, I'll be danged, they do sound like NIN...
Scott - Paltrow plays the titular Sylvia, with a pre-007 Daniel Craig as Ted Hughes. Seen it, not amused in any way. Avoid at all costs!
Eric - Yes, I love the Higher Ground bit, too, and was pleasantly surprised. It came from nowhere. Hahah, My karma ran over my dogma, it makes perfect sense.
Mark - Look what you've done. You've made me all smiley at 5 in the morning. Thank you, dear-mahrk, I shall wholeheartedly take it.
Good music is timeless! So is good sense. (I just wish the name Debt Dept. didn't remind me of my current financial status.)
Mike - Good sense is a life saver. It is too bad we are quick to forget just when we need it most. A reflection of current finances? Yours and mine both!
