WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

inflammable

Posted 9 months ago

Dale's post brought me back to a song in particular by Portland, OR's Quasi as well as a five-year job I had in the late Nineties. I worked on the thirty sixth floor of a conspicuous building. It housed a number of banks and important commerce that Friday afternoon fire drills were dead unflinching; if not that, there was a bomb scare almost every other day. We climbed down that endless flight of stairs like there was no tomorrow but my point, really, is the fire exit.

The thirty sixth floor fire exit stairway was a fast sanctuary to certain highly strung wage slaves. It was there we sought the solace of friend-aided cramming, early-in-the-day beer, afterhours guitar jams, a shoulder to cry on, and other such conspiracies. Bonds were considered, consummated or confused, let's just say. I personally recall darting to the fire exit more than a few times in fits of vomitless retching, thanks to preposterous deadlines and absurd expectations.

When security issues later kept us out of there for good, we moved our business to the parking space on the sixth floor. There don't seem to be that many posts on Quasi so here are some songs, dedicated to the fire exit.

Very funny post, I'm imagining it as the soundtrack ti you and your cohorts running up and down stairs during fire drills and bomb scares. ;)

If only we could have a fire exit for different aspects of life. Or would we bored! I guess we'll never find out. As long as we have our own fire exits in our heads, I think we'll be alright.

On a completely different note, I thought of you yesterday. I am a board game geek {please don't tell anyone} and yesterday I purchased this gem: http://www.atlas-games.com/gloom/index.php

I think that it's totally our kind of game. If we ever meet in person, I'll bring it with me!

Funny how you think your posts have no point. I totally see the point. That's what's beginning to frustrate me about my job; I now need a fire escape for my own home. :(

Those bomb scares are just that, scary. Had the same routine at a travel place I worked at. Turned out to be a girl that worked 2 cubicles down from me. Ya just never know. Sweet tune, digging the crunchy guitar.

I'm scared of bombs, too, since I have to sit through so many of them. Just a couple of weeks ago, there was that screening of "Bride Wars" - and next week, the remake of "Friday the 13th." What crap. As for Quasi, they're so indi...

'boy, does this post not even really have a point.' I'd say that tag was the whole point of the post, it made me laugh so hard! And as for the fire drill business, I've experienced a few in my day too. But unfortunately, there was no music to accompany mine. Btw, Quasi reminds me of a harder version of Jellyfish who did that song 'The King Is Half Undressed' in the early 90's.

fire drills on on my brain today too.  i was at the club last night listening to Pinch drop aquatic dubstep bombs when the fire alarm started buzzing.  at first, i thought maybe it was part of the music (like sirens in jungle music).  but sure enough, it really was a fire drill.

i wish my house had a fire escape.  i've always wanted one for midnite smoke breaks and early morning coffee moments...

Quasi, as in the Sleater-Kinney related act right? Good stuff here.

My school probably has the faultiest emergency exit system in the country.  They bring down garage door-like gates on all of the hallways except for one, so if there ever was a true emergency, we're essentially left with one nine-foot-wide opening for roughly a thousand people. Not a pretty thought, let me tell you.

Eric - i am all about love and peace. ;d

Colin - 36 floors! pretty soon we developed the habit of climbing down then finding a place to eat.

Anna - we'd go insane without those fire exits in our heads. oh, wait. we're already insane, so to speak. (8

ooh, "gloom". thrilled! i am off to follow that link now...

Bill - there was also the pantry with the proverbial water cooler but it did not wield the same power as the fire exit.

Dale - and since there is no limit to wishing, i wish that fire escape connects your workplace to your home.

Galen - oh, man. i don't think anything sinister, like someone being found guilty, actually came out of those bomb scares i remember.

Mike - ahahah. aw, here i was going to check out that new Friday the 13th movie. i had never heard of Bride Wars, however.

Aug - i'm glad i amuse you. ;D i get the poppy sort of similarity with Jellyfish. Quasi did belong to the early '90s guitar sound along with the Built to Spill types and, as bohemianlullaby mentions, Sleater-Kinney.

Molli - i would've completely thought the fire alarm was part of those aquatic dubstep bombs.

i have a balcony (with a strange view) and it's where i do my midnight smoke breaks and early morning coffee/tea moments everyday.

Pamela - yes, as in the Sleater-Kinney-related band (via Janet Weiss). ack, your school could not do any worse! someone tell them they're supposed to keep a fire in and people out.

Anna, omigod, from the writeup alone, i love Gloom already! "to lower their Self-Worth scores, while trying to cheer your opponents' characters" - i am going to be hooked in no time. and those transparent cards are such pretties from here. we can't not meet ... we must play!

thanks, i am alerting the few darklings i know to this game...

To add a new dimension to this post, does anyone else think it's weird that the word "inflammable" means exactly the same thing as "flammable"?

Aug - oh, to make others suffer by suffocating them with cheer, if only in a game. 3)

Chuck - it is fascinating how that word seems doomed to fail from the very start. apparently people mistake it to mean "not flammable" (like the "in" in "inconsolable"). you really are a word geek. ;p

Board games review sites (I told you I'm a board games geek) don't give it good ratings, because of its simplicity in playing and its randomness, but with that scenario and artwork, Fuck if I care! I know you guys are with me! :)

Ratings be damned, the game had me at the writeup and photos. There's a good chance I'll find it in Manila [fingers crossed] and I'll be home soon and can't wait to find out!
