Robert Wyatt : Comicopera (Soft Machine galore pt. 2)

Posted over 2 years ago
the weekend caught me getting double giddy over the fact that ye olde Canterbury psych rock godfathers Soft Machine's Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt are releasing new albums in September and October, respectively. i put up an earlier post on The Unfairground by Kevin Ayers, which came out around 0911. this followup post is on Comicopera by Robert Wyatt, coming out next month.where to begin... you may know Robert Wyatt, if not from Soft Machine, from the bands Wilde Flowers, Matching Mole ("a pun on machine moll, the French for Soft Machine"

  2. Lady Miss Ian says Poe - you are becoming the official "Soft Machine Family Tree" connection for the MOG-O-Verse! Thanks for all the news. I'm copying your posts off to a couple of Prog-Rock friends of mine.

  3. Marigold says My goodness you have the music connection going on! You keep blasting out this great stuff. Your media collection must be quite impressive.

  4. poebegone says contrabandwidth: you're welcome. i have not heard the entire album myself, y'all let me know if you have and what you think. Lady Miss Ian: as Dr. House would say: aw, snap! (; i just felt like the quasi-twin releases should be getting mogged some more. so, yeah, spread the word! Marigold: wow, thanks. my media collection is the opposite of quite impressive. i brought all of 20 CDs to Cambodia and had to leave everything else in a backroom at my parents' house in the Philippines. i also cleaned out my laptop (a cathartic act, don't ask.) and restarted collecting mp3s once i got to Camboland, only last March. in other words: too few.

  5. scotfree says But the ones you do have - pure cream, eh? Wyatt and Ayers are two artists I've been peripherally aware of for years, mostly because of their association with members Roxy Music. But, I've really never given them a fair listen. Except for Wyatt's "Rock Bottom". That seems to wind up in a lot of folks top ten rock lps (if not top five). Like Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", trying to assimilate them with the assertion of legend looming so large always leaves me feeling a bit culturally challenged. I don't mind listening to either recording, but I don't come away with any great epiphany. Likewise, I don't rush to repeat play them any too soon. Kind of discouraging, but I keep trying. I mostly like these two because, like Mog, they keep me humble. Maybe that's the whole point? I bet Ivor Cutler could explain it.

  6. poebegone says scotfree, i love your comment. i mostly know and like Soft Machine more than Wyatt and Ayers, as i haven't exactly followed those two's solo careers. Soft Machine were so happening and innovative, even groundbreaking, in their time. and they were a fuck lot of fun. "the assertion of legend looming so large" (excellent writing!) does intimidate me as well. i love Captain Beefheart, now that you've mentioned him, but have never tried to write about him, much less Trout Mask Replica, what with everything that's been said about it. i guess i was thinking out loud when i wrote where to begin... - that sure is the feeling. tread lightly was my mantra when i did the posts; i told myself to focus only on the new albums by Wyatt and Ayers, otherwise it would get crazy. ps. thanks for the mp3. i will listen to it later, when i get home.

  7. poebegone says jeez, am i drowning in work this week. i just finished listening to your mp3 above (loved it! the meticulous approach is so Wyatt.) and now i gotta wait 'til tomorrow to have time to view the video you posted. i also breezed by the fistula post you linked to, scanned it over real quick, looks like an awesome discussion going on there, and bookmarked it for tomorrow. as for the weird connections, i read ya. if you noticed my mention of mogger leftoverking by the end of my post above, it was because he asked me some days ago if i knew of Anja Garbarek, whom he remembered after reading my post on the dreampop group Drugstore. i said i didn't, and by that time, i had been listening to Wyatt's new song Stay Tuned (posted above) for a while. and then of course i finally got down to write this Wyatt post and discovered Stay Tuned is an Anja Garbarek original. weird connections, right?
