For those of you who wonder what all the fuss is about this hip hop craze, check out this "fly" playlist of hit songs I threw together recently. What gets me about these tracks is how evolved the arrangements are. They make full use of digital technology, are spare in how they leave big spaces in the frequency spectrum for the music to breathe, and offer quite a variety of sounds that non-fans wouldn't normally associate with hip hop. Often they out-Africanize Africa, in dimensions different from late-60's funk. They create new dance rhythms, revealing that field's possibilities as wide open.
