The State of The 808

The Roland TR-808 (or 808) drum machine was created as a way for musicians to record drum tracks for demos. It was considered inferior to the Linn LM-1 which was more expensive and the first drum machine to use digital samples. The lower price and analog sound became the preferred sound of early Hip-Hop and Electronica. This playlist is a sampling of some of the early 808 sound in music (and at least one track showing where the sound still is preferred).

Mantronix..oh, the memories. loved them.
I meant to comment on your avatar, cuz I was just reading about that album today. Classic cover!
What? No Egyptian Lover? He's still out recording and touring with the 808 today!
Oh was going to add - good list even still :)
No 808 for the Louvin's, but I like 'em OK anyway:)
You can't have an 808 playlist without something from 808 State. :-)
Yeah, I know. I was trying for something more early to mid 80's, with a little Crunk thrown in at the end. Plus, I must admit to being rather limited on my knowledge of their work, and my mog player is stuck in 30 second mode again, so it made previewing a bit of a pain.
GREAT playlist!! I've been hankering for some old school!
Thanks!
Great list! Nice variety of genres represented here.
