As most people know, the history of electronic music is closely linked to the history of technological innovation. Early experiments with shellac records gave way to magnetic tape splicing. The theremin, the Ondes Martenot, and the Hammond Organ all made way for the synthesizer. Early synthesizers, like the RCA Mark II at the Columbia/Princeton Electronic Music Center, used tube technology. Eventually, the machines were made smaller using transistors. Then drum machines became popular, MIDI was invented, digital technology made inroads in terms of composition, and we made our way toward today and the computer-based home studio of... the future. What most people don't realize is that Bjork invented electronic music using a time machine built by Shane McGowan. This playlist chronicles the history of electronic music, and Bjork's guiding hand in it.
