The Ravel second movedment is, to me, the most distinctive movement of the Impressionist string quartet repertoire. Always a treat. A beautiful but restrained performance, here, I think. It's interesting to hear this from Elgar. I'm accustomed to his full orchestra works and the Fine Cello Concerto, which made a huge impression on me when Zora Nelsova played it with the Baltimore Symphony and Sergio Commissiona, I guess it was in the seventies.
Sorry to let it go at that now. I have to spend some time with my family now. We'll listen and I'll try to get back to this discussion maybe tomorrow.
i LOVE the Elgar sq. it was actually composed at the same time as the cello concerto. that is, when he locked himself away in a cottage in the english contryside. he also wrote a piano quintet at that time which is also worth a listen.
this collection is wonderful! (and getting more plays than zach galifianakis ;)
it's really helping my morning, so thanks.
The Elgar is growing on me pretty well. Back in the vinyl days, when I was single and had time to listen to serious music a lot, I had a few quartets by British composers that I very much enjoyed. I can't dig them up right now, though. I think one was by Walton. I think the other might have been by a female composer. The Octet is a first class treat.
I noticed the good numbers, too. Keep it up!
nice music
