awesome!
Thanks msq64..It ends up being something like listening to an ADD person switching around the radio dial in 1981 or so..with some exceptions..and probably a New York station.
This is a long playlist. i think i started close to two hours ago. No w on PE. Did the Beasties sample License to Ill?
Either way, Cody sow the musical samples. We the people reap the benefits. This can only happen through MOG.
The lists I saw said they did self sample..Just a little bit of the vocals in "Johnny Royal"
The PE is vocal samples on "eggman"
After posting (and realizing there were 80 songs, simple calculations pointed to this one being at least a 5 hour listen). Still, it's a very good history lesson and now adding Sugarhill Gang to my collection is a must!
One of those great records that could never be made today. Thanks Code.
You are a true gentleman and scholar. Makes a groundbreaking album that much more impressive.
@stoltzitude- Much obilged. A great example of sampling that pays tribute to the songs it uses while recontextualizing them..
@Eric- Yes,yes y'all..you'll find the SHG to be "fresh" throughout. There are other acts on Sugar Hill Records worth checking too, The 4 CD label box might be too much,but...
I've added a few albums (Harvey Scales, Idris Muhammad, Back Door) due to my Beastie breakdowns. The truth is, coming early as they did into the sample game there isn't a ton of rare stuff on here
@mully-It was Ms. g cincinnati's post about sampling that started me thinking about these Beasties.
you rule for pulling this together, cody! that's my favorite album (one of them, anyway). i had always wanted to do something like this, ever since i first heard the album, but never did. so it's awesome to see how it as one long playlist. ...and there's a check your head playlist too?!? THANK YOU!
No problemo bbf..I've been making my own itunes version as I go too, filling in the gaps in my collection as I go..I was glad to get that Ronnie Laws record with prolly the most recognizable lick in the whole bunch.
Love it
sweeeeeeet.
Long time no MOG, UGreg..
Thanks flandmines and welcome to MOG.
Wow, I swallowed my gum. Goodness did you sleep creating this masterpiece? Thanks, Cody!! xo
Cody, this is a BAD-ASS bit of music-wonkery! I'll definitely look forward to ingesting this before long.

But yeah, I'm a bit of a sample-aholic. I've found a bunch of music I like by searching out hip hop sources.
DAMN!, breau! What a f#ckin' trip!! Having been "old school" since back when "old school" was "funky fresh," I am SERIOUSLY bustin' a move over here! (Stand back all you girls and your young ladies or you may find yourselves gettin' busted out with my super sperm!)
I'm sure you are not interested to know....but, as a high school senior in 1982, me and two friends donned loincloths and Indian headdress and did the SHGang's Apache to the instrumental...my salad days.
Freestylin' on top of The Incredible Bongo Band? Jam on it, Jam on it, Jam on it!!
Semi-intricate dance moves,too..Are you familiar with the cats who played the music for the Sugar Hill Gang..the cats who redid that Incredible Bongo band track? Doug Wimbush-Keith LeBlanc-Skip McDonald..those are my Boyyyze!
BTW-I was Big Bank Hank.."My tribe went down in the hall of fame, 'cause I'm the one who shot Jesse James."
Huge thanks for putting together this playlist. It's going to take me forever to get through it, but I will. :)
very nice
How did I miss this playlist?!?
Dunno TF...There's also this one...Checking Check Your Head
awesome playlist. bueno...
Grazie, Snoteboom.
Genius. Thank you so much for putting this together!
