teddy thompson, can't be beat live

Posted almost 5 years ago
so i ventured out to see teddy thompson play the hotel cafe tonight. it was an early show, 8pm (who goes on this early?)and it felt strange walking towards the club in the daylight. i got lucky and scored a great seat towards the front and while waiting for teddy to take the stage i happened to take a look at the gentleman who sat at the table across from me. he looked at me and i thought geez, that guy looks a lot like "rufus sewell":http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001722/.holy shit! that is rufus sewell! so maybe none of you out there know who he is but let me tell you, he's a hunk and a talented actor. check out dark city, it's a fun ride. anyway, soon after i got over my shock at being in such close proximity to rufus, teddy took the stage accompanied by a small string section. i was pretty excited for tonight's show because i had been a fan of teddy's first album, separate ways for some time now but had yet to see him live. so not only had i been waiting for ever for this opportunity but i was getting to see him for the first time in my favorite small venue. i have to tell you teddy went on to perform one hell of a concert for a less than crowded room (where was everyone in LA tonight?). he didn't play any songs from separate ways during his set but instead played all new songs from his upcoming album to be released in july. i tell you i can't wait for this damn album. his sound has gone more country and he kept reminding me a little of chris isaak and roy orbison. his voice was just to die for and the strings complimented him beautifully. his sister camilla even came up on stage to sing two songs with him. both his "mother":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Thompson_(singer) and "father":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Thompson are fairly well known musicians in england so i guess the singing genes were going to be passed on no matter what. i managed to get some great video of the show and my personal favorite is teddy covering "she thinks i still care" by the kings of the road. what a great night."blue bird""she thinks i still care"

  1. Mike the Knife says Nicely done and well-deserved, pink. But I've gotta drop a little history on you: "She Thinks I Still Care" is not only one of the classic country-music laments of all time, it's a signature song for one of the true greats of country music - George Jones, who also wrote it, and was married to, and often sang duets with, the equally significant Tammy Wynette.

  2. dustjelly says Yeah, he's definitely good. Sounds like it was a fun show. I still have no idea who Rufus is, though. And I'll ask for the 1,345th time: could you please, please, please start using capital letters? I feel like I'm engaging in a dialog with a 3rd grader, and it's giving me oogy weirdness vibes.

  3. puddlemere says I adore Teddy's voice, and also Rufus Sewell. Sounds like a win-win. :)

  4. dermahrk says I knew that Teddy was Richard Thompson's son, but it was only after hearing a track off of a sampler CD that I bought his first release. I will be standing in line for the new one and hope he comes to Philadelphia soon.

  5. dustjelly says Ok, I made a rude and uncalled for comment about your capitally-challenged posts. I apologize. Must be some new-fangled Cali-induced trend in writing that hasn't made its way to the Midwest yet. I'll pick up on it in another five years I'm sure.
