In conjunction with the April release of Saturdays=Youth, the french electro-ambient band, consisting of Anthony Gonzalez (and formerly Nicolas Fromageau), gears up for a tour this fall. First started in 2001, M83, named after the galaxy, adopts the "shoegazing" methods of bands like My Bloody Valentine. If you live under a rock as I do, "shoegazing" is a genre that exploded in the late 80's and early 90's and describes the motionless stance that the musicians take on stage, appearing to gaze at their shoes while tinkering with the various pedals and effects that are hallmark of the "shoegazing" sound. The result is a thick "wall of sound" due to the distortion of various guitars and effects lumped into one.
As M83's fifth studio album, Saturdays=Youth was recieved with much critical acclaim nabbing an 8.5/10 from the high and mighty Pitchfork and had Rolling Stone hailing it as "70 mm songs for John Hughes movies yet to be filmed." Still not convinved? Check them out their song "Graveyard Girl" and catch them their upcoming tour.
