WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Ryan Kerrigan, Phish Poster Artist, Revealed and IN PRINT!

Posted about 1 month ago
Phish poster art has become infamous from the amazing and notable Jim Pollack, see the interview with jambands.com that Relix Magazine did with Pollack about his history with Phish that was published in the Festival 8 Express. But Phish poster art doesn't end with Pollack, he is by far their most recognizable artist, and considered their "resident artist", but this can all be hype at times. While Pollack is an extremely talented artist, so is the New York-based painter David Welker, who did the famous RIFT cover art work and poster. The there is PhanArt, a site where you can find all sorts of art work created by fans. Some really talented, some not so much.
One of the artists that has caught my eye over the past Summer Tour and Festival 8 shows was Ryan Kerrigan.
From his own bio I learned that Kerrigan is a New Hampshire native who currently resides in Berkeley, CA. His poster art has become a mainstay in the world of Rock poster art and beyond. He has worked with many of today's promoters and up and coming bands as well as a host of concert venues, festivals and alternative businesses. His use of color and his immediately recognizable style are as free and loose as the music it has been created for. "My first love in art was the old psychedelic rock posters, and to actually be doing that now is a dream come true. I listen to the band as I'm creating the images, and just let the feeling of the music come through in the colors and design." Upcoming plans involve many new projects, both musical and otherwise, as well as continuing to exclusively use hemp paper for all prints.

Shoreline - 8.5.09 -5 1/4" x 16 1/2" - Edition of 100

Kerrigan has painted some of the best posters I've ever seen on tour, there are other notable names, and other styles, such a silk screening, or carving's, but Kerrigan does all of his work completely by hand via marker, pen, pencil, and watercolors...he never uses machines to design his work. He has been a loyal Phish fan since 1991, so he pretty much comes from generation one-in Phish terms.

Indio • October 2009 - 11" x 17" - Edition of 150

Take one of look at his website and you will see he doesn't limit himself to Phish and Phish alone, he also makes posters for ALO, Hot Buttered Rum, and The Joshua Tree Music Festival among many other projects.
He does not plan to make any posters for Phish's upcoming brief Fall Tour, but has Miami on his mind for the Holidays and plans on some big surprises for those shows.

August Tour 2009 - Set Of 5 Posters - 16 1/2" x 25" - Overall Edition of 55 Prints Each

Here are some of my favorite Kerrigan's from this past Summer, and of course the Festival 8 Poster. I couldn't tell you what he has left. His prints are limited, numbered and hand signed. Last I heard Festival 8 was about to sell out. To check out more of his work, or to request a Poster from your favorite show, email Kerrigan from his website. His prices are super affordable, and the quality I can say firsthand is top notch. Be sure to check out what he has in store for us Phans as Miami comes and 2009 goes. I am sure 2010 will bring out more shows and more art, and more amazing, unique posters.
