I went to see Beth as I promised in my last update.
She was great, far better than when I saw her in March. I thought it had been earlier than that but it was that recent. When she walked out on stage, my friend Kevin and I looked at each other and said simultaineously "is she pregnant"? We weren't sure if she was trying to hide it with her billowy dress but she certainly wasn't successful. Later in the program she blamed "San Francisco" for her big changes. She said it was something in the water no doubt ( I will have to explain the facts of life to her ).
Beth played only a couple of pieces from her newest release, "Worms" being one of my favorites where she jumps off the guitar and sits down at the piano. Her musicality is truly gifted. Her voice had a better timbre to it this time as last time she had a cold. Her high notes were clear and true and she appeared to really enjoy being on stage this time. I wish I could give a set list for you but my brain doesn't work that way. I never know titles and such. I just hear music I am familiar with and hum along gleefully. Stats and titles are for the savants in my life, not for me.
Her show ended with THREE encores! She said that she felt like she was ripping people off if she didn't play long enough. The show was just over two hours long without the warm up act. He humor and personality are especially entertaining.
I recommend you see her whenever you have the chance.

i need to start listening to beth soooo badly! so many people recommend her after they hear me profess my love for so many female singer songwriters. what albums of hers do you recommend? i plan on making a big trip to Amoeba in the next couple of days!

There's just something about encores that makes you feel like it has been a more genuine and intimate concert, no matter how big the venue may be.

i have only seen beth play solo acoustic, several years ago. it was great, but i would love to see her with a full band.
putty, if i were you i would start with 'comfort of strangers' and move backwards.
My Trusted MOGs
Her later works are more folksy and the earlier ones more "electronic" if you can go that far. I would do what eshep says...work backwards.

Sounds fantastic. I will start paying more attention to her. It sounds like I've been missing out.

Putty, Daybreaker is pure genius.

So jealous. Soooooo jealous. I love Beth's music so much.... sigh.
I started listening to her with 'Daybreaker' and then basically just got everything else I could get my hands on. Daybreaker & Central Reservation are probably still my two faves, with Comfort of Strangers my least favorite (takes me a while to warm up to new music). I liked the electronic stuff more, especially her work with William Orbit. Loved "Water from a Vine Leaf". However my favorite songs are all hers, like "Daybreaker", "Central Reservation", "Paris Train". All good.
So jealous. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
