PETE NEMA - Now on MOG Music Network!

It's been ages since I've posted to MOG, and there's an easy explanation for that: Just not enough time! But MOG has fixed this problem for me by adding my blog to the MOG Music Network.

You can see my blog's headlines right here on MOG, and even add my blog as a "Trusted Blog". If you're on MOG regularly, it is definitely an easy way to keep up with my concert photos and reviews.

PETE NEMA on MOG Music Network

Yeah Yeahs Yeahs @ The Berkeley Church, Toronto

I still don't quite understand what The Festival Ball was all about, other than, say, hedonistic pleasures. Perhaps that was the point, or maybe it was tied to the Toronto Film Festival somehow, I never did find out. And even though the party at The Berkeley Church was a guest list only event hosted by Vice Magazine, it seemed that getting on the guest list was just a matter of knowing that the event was happening.

Camera Obscura @ The Phoenix, Toronto

Camera Obscura is a band out of Glasgow that has passed through Toronto at least one other time this year, but based on some comments from the band, it sounds like they have played here more often. There seemed to be some concern that Toronto would be tiring of them, but that certainly wasn't the case for the all-ages show at The Phoenix last Sunday, the last show on their current tour. However, it was the first time I was scheduled to see them, and to make the show even more enticing, The Last Town Chorus was billed as the opening band.

Edwin played as the closer to the more-than-12 hour MQMusicFest which was hosted by Metal Queen Management and held at the Phoenix. It was a lineup of 15 bands, some with hair big enough to put Cher of the 80's to shame. It started around lunchtime and ran over schedule a bit with Edwin leaving the stage sometime after 1:30 AM. I arrived in time to catch a few of the bands in the evening and to see Edwin, a musician who brought lots of great music to my ears through the 90's and into the 2000's. But first, a little story about stealing music, in a time before MP3s...

I had no idea that concerts took place at Playdium, but apparently Supernova has a deal that allows them to hold day-long outdoor concerts there, in the grassy area next to the go-carts that can hold a good-size crowd. This was a daytime event that showcased approximately 15 bands, closing the day with the Cancer Bats, a local hardcore punk band lead by Liam Cormier who sings about killing zombies and probably a bunch of other topics (I was unable to make out the words).

Perry Farrell (you know, from Jane's Addiction) is now having a bit of a Satellite Party, and if you go see him he'll even explain what that means. Perry is definitely a unique and very cool individual, and has a streak of rock royalty running through him.

Man, I love the album Boys And Girls In America by The Hold Steady, but now that I've seen them live, I love it 10 times more.
Built To Spill @ Lee's Palace, Toronto

I've been a listening to Built To Spill since sometime after they released their 1999 album Keep It Like A Secret, a relatively short time compared to their 15 years spent together, but not too bad for a boy from Toronto – a city that Built To Spill has left out of their tour roster until now. And over the past three albums, they've slowly become one of my all-time favourite bands. Both Keep It Like A Secret and Ancient Melodies Of The Future are brilliant albums, and their current effort You In Reverse is growing on me with every listen. Although this was their first time in Toronto, they partially made up for it by playing two back-to-back sold out shows at Lee's Palace on July 10th and 11th.

Revival Dear @ The Dakota Tavern

Revival Dear is one of the bands I discovered hanging out at C'est What on Sunday nights last year (when they still had the Sunday night thing going on). Now one of my best friends is their manager, and they play every Wednesday night at Castro's, which is the closest bar to my place. So I see them perform every now and then. However, their performance at The Dakota Tavern was the most exciting I've seen yet. That place, with old wood lining on the wall behind the stage and the simple and very unique lighting just seemed to bring out their best. It didn't hurt that the place was filled to capacity. Their music is country-inspired rock, so the location worked perfectly for them. Oh, and it was loads of fun.

The Polyphonic Spree @ Toronto

After the drug overdose of guitarist Wes Berggren brought Tripping Daisy to an end, Tim DeLaughter (vocals, guitar) and the other remaining band members decided to explore the idea of creating a symphonic rock band, an idea that resulted in The Polyphonic Spree. Now on their third full-length album entitled The Fragile Army, they are touring North America, an impressive feat of logistics given that I counted 23 people on stage last Thursday night. On previous tours they donned white robes for their performances, but this time around they were wearing pseudo-army outfits that featured white hearts on the jackets.

Pilot Speed @ The MOD Club, Toronto

Pilot Speed is a local Toronto act that started out named Pilate but had to change their name to avoid litigation. Even though the name changed occured over a year ago now, I discovered that many people at their show couldn't help but still call them Pilate, and indication of the number of dedicated fans they've picked up since their first full-length CD release in 2003. Their latest Canadian release is called Sell Control For Life's Speed and was released under the name Pilate in May 2006, but it was then re-released in the United States as Into The West under the name Pilot Speed in September 2006, with the addition of the song Into Your Hideout, a hit from their debut Canadian release Caught By The Window. It seems a little messy for fans that have been following them for years, but from a business perspective it all makes sense and should actually simplify their foray into other countries. Either way, I've switched over to calling them Pilot Speed in an attempt to support the band in their quest to acquire fans in new markets.

Photos: Fountains Of Wayne in Toronto

I found out about Fountains Of Wayne in 2003, about the same time that many other people did, but for a different reason. A friend at work had been listening to them for years, and recommended them along with a few other bands such as the Wondermints and Shack. I listened to the recommended songs, and loved their suburban guitar-pop. And right around the same time Stacy's Mom became a bit of a runaway novelty hit. The single could've been considered a sell-out by some fans, but I think that's a stretch since as far as I can tell, it fits in perfectly with all their other music. And if it brought them the attention they needed to continue to make music, then I would argue that everyone wins.

I was looking forward to Saturday of NXNE because I was invited to photograph Ill Scarlett at The Opera House, who were playing along with The Pinker Tones and Marianas Trench. The show was sold out, but there were 400 spots left open for NXNE badge/wristband holders. My plan was to photograph the whole Ill Scarlett show, but then head over to the Queen & Spadina area to catch the Neverending White Lights at the Rivoli, and then Two Hours Traffic at The Horseshoe. Unbelievably, it all went according to plan. I even completely lucked out for a parking space on Queen St. right in front of the Rivoli.

Come see tons more photos and read about the bands:

NXNE 2007: Friday

Since I attempted to do too much on the first night of NXNE, my plans for the second night were much more basic. The idea was to start the night out with a band called Noah's Arkweld, then go just around the corner to Rancho Relaxo to check out a band from Australia called 84, and then straight down to The Horseshoe and spend the rest of the night there for Geronimo, Die Mannequin, and White Cowbell Oklahoma. There were a number of other shows going on that I was interested in seeing, including Soundtrack Of Our Lives, The Sadies, Handsome Furs, John Doe, Tin Bangs, Republic Of Safety, and Birds Of Wales, but I was keen to see White Cowbell Oklahoma, so The Horseshoe was the place. And I stuck mostly to plan, with just one diversion that I won't even go into.

Read on: NXNE: Friday

NXNE 2007: Thursday

I need to tell you now that NXNE 2007 was one of the best times I've ever had in my life completely sober. Yes, that's right, I was driving around trying to catch as many bands as possible so some nights I didn't even have one drink. But the best part was the social aspect. The artists were all very accesible and friendly. So, to start off this series, here's what I got on Thursday:

Perhaps I should've selected a photo of Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo as the lead photo for this article, but even though Blue Rodeo put on an amazing show, NXNE is really all about discovering new bands. So you're looking at Brant Bjork's tattoos as the lead photo instead. I kicked off NXNE by trying to see way too much in far too little time, but it was worth a try. There's just too much for one person to see during NXNE. Although it wasn't all planned out, I managed to see: Simon Wilcox, Lights, Disraelis, Camouflage Nights, Sleeping In The Aviary, Brant Bjork and the Bros, C'mon, Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, and wrapped up the night with Blue Rodeo.

Emm Gryner is always amazing to photograph, so when I found out she was doing a lunchtime show reasonably near my day job, I took a short break to snap a few photos of her. You see, you can never have too many photos of Emm.

I'm still trying to catch up here on MOG, so I'll make this brief. The Golden Dogs have become my current favorite Toronto-based live act. Come to my site to read a little more and see many more photos...

Ron Lopata and John (JK) Kanakis are both Juno award winners and have worked with many Canadian artists, and after spending many years as session players and producers, they have now spent three years creating and organizing Year Of The Monkey, a project that brings together many of their favourite Canadian vocalists and lyricists.

The night included appearances from Kobe James, Andy Stochansky, Haydain Neale (Jacksoul), Tara Slone, Mike Eastick, Jully Black, Lindy, Joel Parisian, Simon Wilcox, Lindi Ortega, and Tomi Swick.

Silversun Pickups in Toronto

Alright, one more catch-up tonight. Back on May 9th, Silversun Pickups passed through Toronto. There seems to be some concern that their sound is a little too heavily based on the Smashing Pumpkins... although I hear that in their music, it doesn't stop them from being a really good band. In fact, they surprised me.

Norah Jones is making me feel it

I spend most of my music listening time with alternative and indie rock. And although I like some Jazz (e.g. Medeski Martin and Wood) most of it just kind of passes me by.

But in mid-2005 I was flipping past the local Jazz station and heard this tune by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band that just got my synapses firing, you know? I found out later that Norah Jones is the vocalist.

This song has been hiding in my collection for the past year, untouched, but I just found it again today. And decided to share it with you. Best use for this song? Passing out, with a smile on your face.

For the second time in as many weeks, I ended up at a show that was quite a bit more bizarre than I had anticipated. But as Perry Farrell once wrote "Nothing's Shocking". Okay, so maybe it wasn't shocking, but a little surprising? Yes. Just a little.

I've been hooked on Ben Folds for many years, but had not managed to see him perform live until this past week. It was no surprise that he had some humour laced between his songs, given that the songs themselves can be quite funny. And although I wasn't expecting him to play a cover of Bitches Ain't Shit by Dr. Dre, I'm now told that it's a crowd favorite.

Well, I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph OK Go at the Ricoh Coliseum last weekend, but there was the usual three song limit and one of the songs was performed in almost complete darkness. So, the shoot was tough, but OK Go was excellent. I'm completely addicted to their music.

Let me start out by saying whatever you've heard about The Constantines' live show is all true. They do severely rock, and strength of their show blasts out through the speakers with aggression. Bryan Webb's lead vocals are gruff and filled with spit and energy. Any bar they leave will be littered with empty, and a few broken, beer bottles. They put on a charged performance, which transferred to the crowd. They played two nights in a row to a packed Lee's Palace... I've just posted photos from the Friday night. Come have a look:

CMW: Saturday

Here are the photos from Saturday I promised (click photo above or link below). CMW was such a blast and the music was mostly excellent. Read on...

The Saturday of CMW had a lot of interesting shows available, and although my friend and I could've just hung out at The Horseshoe all night, we decided to get out to some other venues to see new places as well as new bands. So we started our night with The Yoko Casionos, then made our way up to Rancho Relaxo to catch The Red Light Riot, then took the scenic route back to The Horseshoe for The Golden Dogs, and finally ended up at The Boat for The Mark Inside (not officially part of CMW).

MORE PHOTOS + REVIEW: CMW: Saturday

CMW: Friday

Sorry it took me sooo long to post this on MOG! I was crazy busy and then went on vacation. :-) Saturday from CMW still to come...

There was so much to see Friday night, but I only managed to photograph two bands. I like to think I covered quality not quantity, but in truth there was probably heaps of quality in mass quantities all over Toronto. For example, Saigon Hookers were playing at the Hard Rock. And The Horseshoe had a great line-up including You Say Party! We Say Die! and Cadence Weapon, among others. And I won't even mention that I missed The Besnard Lakes and We Are Wolves at Lee's Palace, or The Miniatures at The Mod Club. But I did manage to get out and photograph a band I really like called Stars Of Track And Field, and then made my way over to see Apostle Of Hustle.

MANY MORE PHOTOS + REVIEW: CMW: Friday

Kicking off Canadian Music Week were The Indies, formally known as the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards. An awards show that is in the spirit, and celebrates the success, of independent music. Hosted by Jully Black, the award ceremony included performances by: DJ Champion, Cadence Weapon, Neverending White Lights, Hellogoodbye, Rough Trade (who were inducted into the Indies Hall Of Fame), Priestess, Wolfmother, and The Stills.

Review + Photos: The Ettes (Beautiful!)

Okay, I realize we're closing in on mid-March and The Ettes played at the end of February, but I was busy driving around in a snowstorm for six hours last Thursday and I only just recovered, mentally. Oh, and I went on a drinking binge too. You know, the kind induced by skiing. It goes like: Wake up early, skiing, lunch, beer, skiing, bar, beer, dinner (liquid), scotch, bed. Repeat.

So...

Sorry it took me so long, BUT I've just posted photos from The Ettes Toronto show at Lee's Palace. Loved it. I had trouble getting my lens away from the drummer (Poni), which explains why there are so many photos of her. Beautiful!

Come check out the rest of the shots and the short review:

Bright Eyes is all about Conor Oberst, who has been making music professionally since the age of 14 in 1994. He has worked with a number of indie musicians, including members of Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, and Spoon. Bright Eyes' most recent CD release is from early 2005 entitled I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, but this current tour is just in advance of the next release, Cassadaga, due out April 10th, 2007.

Photos + Review: The Apples In Stereo

Formed (more or less) in 1993 as part of the Elephant 6 collective, a group of like-minded indie bands that included Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples In Stereo have been producing full length albums since 1995. Although the band had a recent lineup change with the departure of Hilarie Sidney (drums), their indie-pop sound has stayed the path led by frontman Robert Schneider. Schneider recently appeared on The Colbert Report "Green Screen Challenge" singing a tribute to Stephen Colbert that helped bring some additional attention to the band. I discovered Apples In Stereo in mid-2003, and since then I've been listening to their back catalogue fairly regularly. Their 60's inspired music has a pleasing lo-fi sound that has helped put Apples In Stereo in my overall top 50 bands.

IndieCan Birthday Bash

IndieCan Radio is a website where "indie fans meet indie bands". Their weekly podcast focuses on local Toronto talent with interviews and music. To celebrate IndieCan's birthday, a birthday bash was held at Jeff Healey's Roadhouse and was devoted to help AthletesCAN help Canadian amateur athletes. To start the evening, a short movie entitled What Is INDIE? was shown and then followed by performances by Tin Bangs (who have previously opened for The Killers), Anti-Hero (London Ontario's 2006 Rock Band of The Year), and Tocoma Redd (who recently had a successful CD launch at The Horseshoe).

Midlake is a five piece band out of Texas that was formed by a group of music school students. Their first full-length CD, Bamnan and Silvercork, was released in 2004 with album art that is based on a short film this team made together early on. Throughout the show on Monday night, playing to a sold out crowd at Lee's Palace, the band projected images on a screen behind them while they played, including the aforementioned short film during their live performance of Some Of Them Were Superstitious, one of the musical and visual highlights of the night.

Pony Up!

Pony Up! is an all-girl four piece band out of Montreal, an epicentre of Canadian indie-pop music. Their music is light, yet complex enough to keep your interest, and the lyrics are authentic, if not even a little confessional. I suspect these are the reasons Pony Up! attracts a largely female audience. However, even though the band has an overall cuteness, there is definitely sexuality emitted during their stage performance, which easily explains the male fans and their audacious behaviour that made for some bizarre moments.

Pride Tiger, Superstack

New Music night at The Horseshoe can often be a great place to discover up and coming bands. In June 2006, I went to there to catch a West coast band called Bend Sinister, but got there a little early - in time to see the opening band Pride Tiger. I'd never heard Pride Tiger before, but their set really caught my attention, and since then I've been loosely following them. Pride Tiger was back in Toronto this past week, and to top it off they were playing the same night as a local Toronto band called Superstack that I've been wanting to see for a while. It was a night filled with classic rock guitar, clear vocals, and a taste of jam band, all in the good way.

Skytone is effectively two brothers, Rodney and Darius Doddridge, based out of Canada's capital city Ottawa. Playing a variety of instruments and even sharing the vocals, they've crafted an acoustically driven album with nine melodic alt-pop tunes in the vein of Shack or the Wondermints, and share some musical affinity with The High Dials.

Neverending White Lights, Emm Gryner

The Neverending White Lights played at the intimate venue of The Drake Underground for three sold out nights in a row this week. The place was decked out with chandeliers and stained glass lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling, coloured sheets draped around, huge candlesticks adorned the stage on both sides, and white roses were positioned around and on the stage. Coupled with the rust coloured drapes that back the tiny stage, it produced a really warm feeling for the room. Opening for Neverending White Lights was Emm Gryner and Jack Gennaro, but I wasn't there in time to see Jack. :-)

As part of The Edge Electric Xmas Concert Series, The Mod Club was host to three bands that were well suited to play the same night: The Flatliners, Hostage Life, and Ill Scarlett. It was an all ages show and my guess was that about half of the crowd was underage. There were two areas reserved for alcohol consumption, with the main area open to all ages, but with Ill Scarlett headlining, it may be no surprise to learn that no matter which area you were in, there was the permeating smell of one illicit substance eminating from the crowd.
