Say what you will about The Killers (upstart nutrasweet band who rips off quality musicians and dresses it up in Mormon glam to sell records in the Heartland seems to be the frequent complaint), but those Las Vegas boys can pull together a catchy tune. Although Brandon Flowers has all the stage presence of pre-cooked French toast (and how can this be when he's so friggin' cute? And he wears eyeliner!), his voice is the little arena rock engine that could; dress that voice up in fun 80s-inspired riffs and you've got sonic gold, son. The Killers debut effort Hot Fuss was wildly uneven, but when it got it right, it really got it right. I expect the same from their sophomore album, Sam's Town, but allow me to say that there's a reason why all the music rags are getting all starry-eyed over the new single "When You Were Young." If you're on Mog, you've probably already heard it and scoffed at it or, embarrased to love it, have been secretly learning the lyrics; however, if you're a bit of a musical dilletante like me, then you should head over to The Killers' website where the song is on a constant loop.
