But I really can't say no to a pop song

Posted over 5 years ago
So, as noted in the previous post, I've recently moved to S. Korea and so far I've heard a ton of hip-hop and bubblegummy pop music blasting from various cars and storefronts; sometimes it's Korean, but often it's American (they didn't get the memo here that Backstreet Boys lost their shine in 2001; keep in mind that I am an ardent supporter of "I Want It That Way.") It's kind of like revisiting my fourteen year old self. On acid. Angst does not seem to exist in pop culture here. Kind of refreshing...while kind of terrifying.

  2. ivylander says Keep track of everything you hear and let us know what's cool. Given some of the really dark movies that have been coming out of Korea in the past couple of years, I'm guessing there's more to their music than the usual poppy pap.

  4. 530nm says South Korea... hmmm I have a friend that was telling me about the music scene there seeing as how that is where she is from and she pretty much confirms what you stated... but really, pop is pop and it never goes away or loses it's campy appeal... Let them have their moment in the plastic sun (which is a great song by Sonic Youth mind you) they will figure out that at some point backstreet must hit the gutter and alley ways.
