Would you say that you are getting more rigid or more broad in your musical tastes as you age?
I, paradoxically, feel as though it's both.
Examples? Thoughts?
As evidenced by my many posts dedicated to my iPod, it's obvious that I have no problem with the MP3 age...I love having all that potential right there. However, with all that's available in terms of just...all that potential...I feel as if I often go into a fugue state of music binging (Nine new albums in one day? Sure! I know you know what I'm talking about), knowing quite well that I'm never going to be able to give any of them the kind of listen I would have given them when I was growing up. Yes, my tastes were decidedly less discerning when I was between the ages of five and twelve, but I was certainly no less excited about music. The difference was that new music was a treat--our home had tons of records lying about but none of it, save for my sister's awe-inspiring pop collection (remember the Purple Rain purple vinyl? The awesome fold-out Olivia Newton John?), current, and getting a new cassette was really something to get excited about. And because no one loves with the same ardent idiocy as a child, the tapes that I would get would often be played into the ground. I knew every word of every song, even for the songs I didn't like, and that made me feel like a loyal listener. Are any of you familiar with the 70s book/early 80s cartoon movie of The Last Unicorn (soundtrack by America...you should really check it out)? Well, there's a character in it named King Haggard and, as his name might suggest, he's a pretty curmudgeonly guy and nothing makes him happy, except unicorns. So he set about capturing all the unicorns and driving them into the sea outside his castle so that he could always see them. (I have a point.) These days, with 30-second sound bites, mini-reviews, and the skip skip skip buttons (no wonder my iPods keep breaking), I feel like maybe technology is making me a little jaded, that perhaps its making me a King Haggard, amassing a lot of music, but losing my personal connection to it.
...or I could just be having a weird day.

I think we all go through this as we get older, I feel that you end up knowing more music with out falling in love with it in the process. I look at the records I know from start to finish, and most of them are from when I was a kid. Like you, I find it easier to get music now that I am older. When I was a kid, when you got something it was special, and you knew you would not be getting a new record in sometime, as a result you were forced to listen, learn and love all the music found on it. Now, if you start to get tired of a new album, your record store or Itunes is just s short trip away
...I'll post some more short ditties as footnotes for the previous post.

I would say both as well, I listen to more, yet am very selective in what I buy
Both! I like more kinds of things, but not everything in a given genre. I used to like every hip hop record..but not so much anymore
Definitely less rigid. I'm more open to different types of music, than ever.
