Filter Stuff

Greetings peoples! I found a cool lil' bit of stuff from Filter over at the AT&T Blue Room. They perform two songs, "Soldiers of Misfortune" & "The Take" and Richard Patrick talks about the album and current goings-on with the band. He discusses why the band is now signed independent, his alcoholism, and the theme of the album to give you a little taste.

If any of you don't know who Filter is, which I'm sure you do, since I find all my new music from you, they are an industrial/hard rock band who were popular in the mid/late 90's. I tagged one of there hits too, so you can give it a listen.

I haven't written about it yet, and I don't know if I will since it was a while ago, but I saw Filter earlier this year in a little hole in the wall in MN. It was my first experience with the band, and it was awesome. I won't go into detail here though. So please, check this out if you will. I will say that I wish there was more reaction from the guys when they play. I've seen enough acts over the years to know this power, but I guess they are merely playing to themselves and a cameraman in a studio room, so there's no one to pump them up.

Enjoy!

I just happened to be looking around the web and I ran into a video of Alanis Morissette performing a satire of The Black Eyed Peas "My Hump". I was surprised at how good it was.

Rage Against the RNC

I stumbled across this site earlier yesterday for those interested in hearing the Rage Against the Machine acapella during the RNC. You can go to Charley Rogulewski's post to read more about it, or not if you're tired of hearing about it.

Go here to check it out. I wanted to share this quickly this morning, since I'm already late for work, otherwise I'd of done all the fancy shmancy embedding to spare your wrists with all of the clicking and clacking.

Share and Be Shared!

So some of you, probably only Mr. Mike the Knife, pinkertonwasbetter and Charley Rogulewski at the moment, may be getting added trust mogger email notes from Mog, now and in the future. There's a plug/app. (I'm not computer savvy enough to know which, but I think it's a plugin) called socialbrowse going around the intarwebz right now, that I'm using to share your wonderful music stuffs, but it's only a beta so it's by invite only. Don't be alarmed (which I doubt any of you will) by this sudden surge of people.

Socialbrowse allows you to share what you are looking at online with your fans by the mere click of a button. I find it very useful for finding interesting tidbits of news online and for good ol' time wasting at work. You create a tiny lil' profile, and have an avatar and that's about it; nothing crazy like Facebook or Myspace. Hit me up if you want an invite, but I'll need your email to do it. I believe it is only a Firefox plugin as of now, but may be expanding. Check it out, if it'll let you join!

Crumbly Tunes?

Hey y'all. I came across this article a while back. Thought I'd share it with ya!

Drop by the University of California, Santa Barbara's Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project to add some truly cool alternative oldies to your music collection — the site has a compilation of about 8,000 songs from the early 1900s. The archived tunes are the oldest to have been digitally preserved; the originals were the first commercial recordings made in the U.S. — etched onto wax-and-metal cylinders, vinyl's precursor. (The site has an extensive history of cylinders as well.) As you listen to the hymns and spirituals, cakewalks and string quartets, you'll feel as if you've waltzed back in time. Are you more into the spoken word? You can also tune into comedy and vaudeville performances, which were among the most popular and amusing recordings of the time. All the audio is free to stream in your browser or download as MP3s, courtesy of the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

Incubus on Indefinite Hiatus

One weak reason I haven't posted is I lost my ability to post songs because Mog (at least in recent past, I don't know anymore) only allows(ed) MP3 music uploads and I don't have that conversion software anymore. Yes, I am an Apple whore. I have all sorts of stuff to "inform" yous guys and girls about, maybe even stuff you haven't heard of, although that's doubtful. You've heard the others.

The first one, is that Incubus is on hiatus. This news is a bit dusty, so I'm sure someone on here has got the DL on it. This news is in the wake of guitarist Mike Einziger constructing an orchestral opus dubbed End.Vacuum. Brandon Boyd told Billboard.com that he is to attend an university in an art program, while Mike will be studying composition. Jose has "a baby on the way", so he's devoted to family for a while. He states that they will disappear for a year or two.

This bit of news sucks. Another one of my favorite bands, like so many before them, are traversing the "on hiatus" route. I was really sad, until I happened to check out DJ Chris Kilmore and Ben Kenney performing at the Varsity Theatre on the U of M campus a few months back.

The venue is reminiscent of a smoking lounge, with couches, comfy chairs, and depending on the act, small round tables strewn about. There is a huge disco ball in the middle of the stage area that is often used and gives the performance more of a laid back, mystique.

Kilmore opened with a bunch of cuts he made. I think if you go to his myspace page, you can still download them for free. He freestyled a bunch and it was most enjoyable.

As I waited Ben Kenney to take the stage, I wondered what he was going to play or how this was going to pan out. I knew he used to be the guitar player for the Roots for a short stint, but that's about it.

When Ben and his crew took the stage, I was literally blasted to my chair with an aura of sound I couldn't describe. Hard and crunchy, yet smooth as silk and loud as all get out, Ben and his crew tore the stage up, totally surprising me and winning me over. I was forever a changed man.

A few songs into the set, I ran over to the merch booth and bought two of his albums, which I haven't put down since. I also met Kilmore later on and chatted him up a bit, and he was totally cool, not that I'm surprised by this. So I get to say that I met someone from Incubus (can you tell I'm excited?). If you are curious, Ben's style is unique, but his sound, as was described to me by the merch dude, is "just good rock". It's definitely modern, and there are some punk-speed tunes here and there, and sometimes it's funky, but I highly recommend his stuff.

When I get the software converter again, I will post some tunes. Peace~

Crass

I don't know how the music industry truly operates, but if I had to venture a guess, this is one aspect.

I always hear about bands that come out, are signed, or are just heard in the same era and the majority of them are often criticized because they sound similar with one another, or because they sound like the trail blazer who just happens to be the lucky one who gets signed first.

Because of our wonderful capitalist greed infused music industry, I'm sure similar sounding bands are signed and marketed at the same time because their market "sound" will more likely sell. This, in turn, creates a cash flow for the industry. How sickening. Does talent count for anything anymore, or is this all that life has turned into - a never ending quest for gain?

I really thought I'd have more to say about this but that's about it. Any other insight?

From Hatred to Love - How I Came to Adore Some of My Most Despised Bands

It started with pop music. Those annoying, catchy songs everyone has heard that cling to the inside of your cranium like crazy glue. For those of you who do not radio, I hope you never know this type of torture. Growing up in my teens, I latched onto the idea that if a song was super pop-y and catchy, I would not like it - you all know the whole teenage rebellion ways. This is why I initially despised rap & hip hop (although I was diggin' Bob Marley and a few of my parents' favorites that eventually turned into a love of reggae and hip hop [check out Sublime or 311]).

I hated or at least heavily disliked bands and artists like Papa Roach, the Smashing Pumpkins, Filter, Jay-Z, Linkin Park, and even Tool, who now are all mainstays, upon our first impressions. Papa Roach was too radio friendly, as were the Smashing Pumpkins and Linkin Park, whereas Jay-Z was a hustler, a type of lifestyle I wasn't OK with, Tool was over hyped, and Filter was just...something. Yes, I realize that these guys are all pretty pop rock in general (except Hova), but I've always considered myself at the cusp of pop and non-pop. Because of my ability to enjoy entire albums, I consider myself somewhat an unconventional listener. Most of my favorites songs are not singles, which I'm sure mirrors quite a few of you here.

So what made me change my views around? I simply became more open minded and I think that had a lot to do with 311. During this era (roughly '95), their album lineup was the Blue album, Grassroots, and Music, most of which offered a full feast of auditory delights. Blue was mostly a hard rock/hip hop mash, with a few smooth soothers dotted throughout the album, while Grassroots really displayed 311's lyrical style and talent and had a hip hop sort of zenith. Music was a middle ground between the two, but one of their best efforts and best balanced albums to this date. The multitude of different styles and the way they were sewn together on the meats of their music really struck a chord within, laid waste to my walls of certain music types and totally changed my view of how music was "supposed" to be. Now, I listen to pretty much everything. This has it's own blessings and hardships.

If anyone reads this, I'm interested to hear whether you've had a similar experience, or if you just want to throw a comment in for good measure, be my guest!

Thin Discs Wrapped in a Crispy Plastic Shell Are the Way to My Soul

I can't force myself to accept the digital music purchasing idea. I've purchased music through iTunes before, but it really irks me. I need to have the physical copy in my hands. I like the album booklets and inserts (and lyrics, sometimes), the hidden artwork behind a black CD holder piece, the CD artwork, the fact that if my hard drive crashes, I have something to listen to and I haven't lost my entire library. No, I didn't buy the 13 versions of Smashing Pumpkins' Zeitgeist and I don't plan on buying them, but I do like rarities or accidental version releases, like 311's Grassroots, that become collectibles. Yes, I'm a slave to the music industry and their materialistic ways. I'm just glad I wasn't big into music when cassettes were huge. I'm sure in about 10 years (or even right now) someone will say the same thing about CDs.

The length of this title is fitting for an emo song. I suppose it could always use a few more words just to be safe...

Personality or Is it Mog or mog?

Hey moggers! It's been a while.

So, before I try and give reviews on some ancient concerts from '07, I thought I'd write up a little something inspired from a forgotten mogger's conversation. I have about 30-some Mog newsletters that I've kept so I can add some comments here and there from conversations probably long forgotten and his/her comment is in there somewhere. See comments about self below.

Someone had mentioned something about buying albums to only listen to their favorite songs. It was an argument about buying songs online versus albums to hear a band's all around sound, I think. He/she was a proponent for buying the album. He/she then made a comment about how most people listen to their favorites from an album and then pop the CD out. Man, I really wish I remember the comment, because it actually fits what I'm about to say a little better than I have done here.

For me personally, my favorite bands are my favorite for a reason. I can listen to their entire collected works and I enjoy every single song. Some people probably find it a bit obsessive, but that's the truth. The comment also brought to mind a habit of most people of being able to listen to a song or album repeatedly in tandem. I've only been able to do this once. It was Limp Bizkit's "The Unquestionable Truth". Long silence We won't get into Limp Bizkit here, as I'm sure many of you just spasmed and cringed horribly. Otherwise, as soon as that CD is done, even if it was just released, I move on to other sounds. It's also why I think I've been able to listen to my favorite bands for years and never tire of them. And on that note, the poast is done...

Okay...is M(m)og a proper noun? Let's decide. Why do I care? Because I'm a meticulous, anal retentive type. Cast your votes now!

I also can't decide if I'm funny or obnoxious. The voting is closed on that one though....

Shinies

I love to write. I wouldn't say I am splendid, but I try. After reading some reviews, I think to myself, "I wish I could write like that", but at the same time I don't. My years of being a post-grunge teen have ingrained in me to strive for some originality and my writing techniques attempt to showcase that. Sometimes it works (at the very least, I think it does) and sometimes it does not.

There is a certain flow to writing of any style that I struggle with. That is why it usually takes me a while to post something. I can have a hard time connecting. This is quite embarrassing, when I've posted something that took a load of work and I later read it only to find it heavily flawed. Please feel free to ridicule and point out any flaws! It's the only way I'll learn.

What was it I was really going to write about now? Oh, yes - my music.

This effort is slowly becoming quite self-focused...

You may see/hear some blips of songs that I've written on here from time to time. I felt inspired to write this post because of how highly original music is regarded here (duh, it's mog). I've always felt an invisible force trying to coerce me to write lyrics for my music. The short of it is that I'm not a lyricist by my own
definition; I have not the clever delivery on life or the things in it. Maybe it's because I'm my own worst critic and I don't allow creativity to flow because I'm not where I want to be with composition. I write post-grunge and acoustic melodies and to that end, most people expect some sort of lyrics to entertain that type of
music. I would like to break that chain. This brings me to my next idea - the creation of a new genera of music.

Most of my life, I've been fascinated with music. I played instruments as a child, and I hear music in everything. This
audiophile is reluctant to say that he did not start listening to music until he was in his teens during the alternative/grunge 90's - wholeheartedly anyway. This fascination has had me considering how to
discover a new genre of music. It seems nigh impossible to create one, though. And I don't mean subgenre. I mean something like soul, funk, blues, rock - large genres. I can only think that the next big genre is already out there and is just not popular, or is going to something unimaginable.

I've always been the type of person who enjoys the music for the music, not the lyrics. If I happen to enjoy the lyrics, that adds that much more to the song. Perhaps I'm trying to create a new type
of rock - instrumental only. Maybe not. It's probably already out there. Isn't Dream Theatre like that? We shall see where it goes, I guess. As of now, a buddy of mine and I are focusing on creating a production group that will eventually blossom into other things.
Currently, it focuses on EDM. Let me know if you'd like a listen.

What was with starting my Killers review with some negativity? Ugh. I'll try not to do that again.

Here's a bit from their latest release. I think that was back in 2005. You may all remember them from their hit, Flagpole Sitta' back in '97.

If you go here, go can download the entire album free of charge! Pretty sweet deal if you ask me...

I Was Killed by the Killers, How Original

I have to say Minneapolis crowds can really suck. I usually acridly dislike them, at least in larger venues. Even in smaller ones, if the crowd isn't booing the performers, they're bastards to each other. The only exception are 311 fans (not that I'm biased or anything...). I've been to one crappy Chicago crowd (which happened to be one of the best shows ever - Oasis), but nothing can beat a glazed over Minnesota crowd - at least in the more popular music scene. Now, I didn't come here to dog the Minnesotans, I was born and raised here, but I can't help it when some one brings five beers for his buddies by himself into the heart of the crowd right before the headliners start. There goes about $50 of overpriced yeast...

And out comes 10 years of crowd related angst. Wow. What a way to begin a review, huh? Welp, you can here for a reason - or maybe not.

Let's get down to business. The Killers were preceded by two bands - the opener was some country dude, who I didn't catch the name of, who twisted the elbow of country with some unique lyrics. I actually did not mind his music, but his singing was a tad obnoxious with all of the cursing albeit, he was a good singer.

I really liked the second band, the Envy Corp., although for their type of music they didn't need to be as loud as they were. Ya, ya, I know, if it's too loud, you're too old. Meh...I'd rather keep my hearing, so I can actually enjoy music for the rest of my life. I recently saw the Deftones and this band rivaled them in volume. They were a groovin' band, but they were a tad mellow and not really warming up the crowd for the Killers.

Cue dude with 5 beers for his buddies drunkenly staggering about the crowd rubbing elbows with countless chicks wearing heels (why does this happen?), asking their boyfriends who the "hot one" was again. I laughed when my g/f told me that one chica asked her boyfriend that exact question when the Envy Corp. was on. She didn't even know what band she was there to see.

When the Killers came on, they were stellar - from beginning to end. The crowd started to drain my energy and I began to feel like the show sucked. I looked around to see the crowd just standing and staring like deer caught in the headlights of a 20 megaton wall of sound, and I realized that the show didn't suck, the crowd did. No sooner than I made the observation, than did Mr. Brandon Flowers comment on it. "This isn't going the way I planned at all...," he said. "People, this is a Killers show!"

For a moment, I feared the band may decide to walk off, but thankfully, the crowd seemed to take the bait and snap out of it. The Killers gave it all they had and the crowd finally let loose. Not much else to say other than, way to go Killers, you did not disappoint!

Peace, my brethren. Another 8 months until I post...

So I guess I wandered to mog slightly confused. I feel like I'm some watcher now. It's kind of creepy. I just look at profiles when I have the time. Haven't made any comments, because the computer I'm on speeds up the audio and makes the music sound like an Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon and I can't tell my like or dislike. Since I'm a wordy guy, I probably won't post much music on here, just give reviews.

I'm sort of worried that I'm more of a popular music guy. It seems many moggers have tastes that show disdain towards some popular music. I could be generalizing too, you never know. I feel like a lesser snoot of music snooties. I want to be the snoot!

Ugh! There's just not enough time in the day. Fare well, my fellows and fell-ettes!

Snow Patrol with OK Go, and Silver Sun Pickups

I recently saw Snow Patrol with OK Go, and the Silver Sun Pickups and although I'm quite familiar with Snow Patrol, I had not heard much of the latter two bands' music, but thought all of the bands had exceptional performances. Lately, I've been seeing many bands in theatres and auditoriums and not only does this affect a bands’ sound’s ambiance, but their acoustics also differ than the sound from your normal hand-tossed style venue.

I saw the Pumpkins for my first and only time (so far) at Northrop years ago and it was fantastic, and this time coming wasn't any different. It's hard to give an opening band much credit for a great performance when one, the crowd is quite tiny at the beginning if they are one of a few opening acts for the headliner, two, because of this small crowd, the band could have a hard time really getting into their music because they don't have a fully active and participating audience and three, their sound usually doesn't have the highest interest in the sound board people's eyes or aren’t completely backed by the full audio system of the venue (although, what do I know, I've never performed with a sound board backing me in the rock genre).

After the other bands played, it was very obvious that Silver Sun Pickups did not have access to all of what Northrop's sound system had to offer. Nevertheless, they performed quite well, and I was impressed. In terms of familiarity with the band, I had about zilch, so their live performance will probably end in some purchase or other of their current release. Their sound was reminiscent of a smooth, mellow breeze (at least to me), and although they had some edge, I felt quite relaxed after their set.

Next up was OK Go. This band wasn't really what I was expecting and was the most upbeat of the three. When they came on, it was like throwing a rock in a mirror smooth pond in terms of my listening mood. I had really settled in for a nice ride after Silver Sun, and then the earth was shaking! It was actually a pleasant change to have them in between Snow Patrol and Silver Sun Pickups to break up the flow of tones of the bands a little. They had some interesting visuals that I hadn't seen before, and they were pretty loud and rockin'! One of these visuals was a live feed camera on the all of the band members' microphones. Talk about up close and personal...

OK Go is popularly known for their unique music videos and their performance wasn't lacking this feature. They had a "movie" of a room wallpapered in red with a design repeated throughout it. There was a table and lamp also colored in this fashion. Accompanying the music was a person in a costume, also covered in wallpaper of this same color, which danced mechanically - very amusing.

I would have to say that OK Go's music is quite eccentric, but not having listened to their record(s) or being studied up on their lyrics, I dare not make any more "accusations". I enjoyed this band very much.

Last up was Snow Patrol . I have to say that this band had the most to prove to me. I've been becoming more and more of a Snow Patrol fan and I was wondering how they would fare with the type of music they've written. Let me just tell you, they exceeded my expectations!

I thought that Snow Patrol's slower, simpler sound would be difficult to perform with much energy. Boy was I wrong! Gary Lightbody sang superbly and the band was full of energy. It's hard for me to really describe the feeling if you weren't there, so I apologize if I'm coming up short. There was only one other band that I've seen in my lifetime that sounded like I was listening to their recording and that was Oasis. I don't want to make this a comparison review, but that statement coming from me really says something! You could have been standing there with headphones on and you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from the live act! I left the show feeling like I was in another realm and I have since listened to their most recent release many times.

Any questions? Good. Let’s move on.

A Panicked Update!

After reading another mog about this band and actually reading the lyrics to their hit, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", I'm still not seeing the hype. I guess this old dog is getting too old to understand this new emo type of music. The author of the post I read, who happened to be on the Mog Gazette, utilized means which I thought were humorous, but didn't exactly agree with. I'm not going to go into detail about how I think people should behave or write, but I'll say his view was quite angry, and the way he came off actually took away from whatever point he was trying to reach.

I'm coming away from my main point in the process here. Panic! took a good idea and made a successful song about it, but I personally think there wasn't enough writing done for the song. The idea is in the first verse (people exude secrets when they shouldn't) and there's no follow-up to the painted story. The chorus is very repetitive - almost exhaustingly so.

Even though I think I'm going to continue critiquing music, I will write a post about criticism in general, as I think it's important to point out a few things as I'm "talking" to myself in these posts to remind me that my music will be loved and/or hated one day. I hope it's more of the former, but who knows, ey? Cheers!

P.S. Whoever submitted this album to iTunes misspelled tragedies...

Panic! This stuff is...different.

I gave the tagged album a listen just to see if they weren't some regurgitated emo-type band that's been on the airwaves as the next "thing". Nice try guys. Lyrics aside (I haven't reviewed them), their sound is emo with a miniscule flare of "uniqueness". I can see where they tried to refine their sound, I can actually hear the disco inspired drumming, but it just isn't doing it for me. That and I can't shake the fact that the lead singer's voice is exactly the same as that of Fall Out Boys'. The songs all sounded quite similar to me as well. I'm not saying I'm cutting the band off. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, but I'm certain that it won't help. I know what you are thinking...all of this from a guy who's most recent listenings are all Blink-182. Yeah, well I got nothing for you...

Critique

This blog will be my music review blog.

A couple of notes:

I tend to overrate bands, especially ones that I am a huge fan of. Deal with it. Until I can make a conscious effort to desist this, you may be flamboozled.

My reviews must always be taken with a grain of salt if I haven't seen the band live. A good live act can overshadow a poor recording. If I really dislike the band, it won't matter if I've seen them live.

I tend to like bands based on their musicality, not their lyrical abilities. I may love a band that has the worst lyrical writing. This is sort of akin to George Lucas' dialogue abilities.

Don't forgot to truly enjoy my posts, get lost in them, and hate me for them....
