WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Radiohead Through Recording Albums?

Posted 4 months ago

This just came across my wire. Radiohead is announcing that full length albums are no longer in their future.

I don't know about you, but I have a feeling they will be lauded for this, which will envigorate my anger after the flak Billy Corgan received for saying/doing the same thing. What do you think public reactions will be?

Hmmmm, interesting. I can't recall the band but recently they made an announcement that they would only be releasing singles since that's what has been successful for them. Wish I could recall the group. They aren't a huge band. Oh hell!(it'll come to me later at 3:00am, ha!)

Since Radiohead have been darlings in the industry I'm sure they will be praised for this. Although I can also see fans being outraged at the prospect of no full lengths down the road.

On the other hand, as much as I love Radiohead it seems ridiculous to me that they are saying they just can't do albums anymore. It's like saying you can't do the main portion of your day job. But I suppose singles are the wave of the future though and the whole music industry has changed & continues to morph into something new. It's definitely a great time to be involved in it!

Yeah, I just can't wrap my mind around a singles-release-only band.  To me it sounds like they are saying, "Hey, most of our music is crap, so now we are only going to release one good song and throw out the rest."

I don't like this path for any band.  It'll morph from the record labels and radio telling you what to listen to, to the bands only releasing songs that they want you to listen to.  The way of the fan discovered/fan picked singles is out the door.

I realize too, that not every band will go this route, but now that this seems to be the way of the future, I worry.  I am not a singles guy.  I generally like the band's entire repertoire.

Yea I'm an album sorta guy myself. I like finding the gems in an album & often my fave songs are ones not picked for singles. Yea it's rather disconcerting but I'm not going to worry about it, I have much bigger fish to fry. Que sera sera.

I have a feeling they will realize the folly of this path & come back around. Remember when Radiohead didn't perform 'Creep', the song that broke them big, for the longest time but have since relented & perform it now periodically. I've only seen them once back in '01(for the 'Amnesiac'[my fave r.head cd] tour) & I don't think they did it then. Didn't matter to me since I enjoy so much of their other music & got tired of it. Don't blame them really but I remember a guy next to me wondering if they were going to do it.

How often do media outlets only play the "singles"(usually the crappiest songs anyway). As August says the best stuff on an album is usually hidden and you have to dig for it-thats the real fun of music to me.  There are plenty of bands who matter who wont take this path-so--Radiohead good luck

Do they think they're now incapable of a coherent or worthwhile long-form musical project? Are they frustrated with the problematic economic models? Or are they just lazy?
