- John Stanier, previously banging the drums for Helmet has a new band called Battles. - What now ? Stanier ? - Yep. And they don't sound anything like Helmet, but he sure sounds like Stanier...
I had to check it out. I've been listening to it a lot. It's great to have it pumping in the earphones when walking through Rio de Janeiro, in the 12:00 sunny chaos.
They use pretty much your conventional rock instruments but feed them into sampling pedals and others effects to loop the shit out of their playing and build up the great angular riffs that make this music interesting.
Add to this the ultraprecise drumwork and there you have it: a great record.

I saw an interview with these guys in CMJ magazine, and liked what I read. Liking the post as well, might have to mosey on over to Barnes and Noble to listen to the entire album

Battles is great. Pretty innovative for what they do. They are on tour now, made one stop in Seattle a little while back and they're coming back at the end of the month to play a bigger venue. Guess they made an impression. Have them on my "to see" list. Ep B/C Ep is pretty good too. I have to be in the mood for them, hyperkinetic is an apt description.

I'll be seeing them on Nov. 1st. I like how Stanier is the focus of the band. He definitely deserves it especially with his style of drumming. Ex Don Cab members in the band are pretty tight too. I'll post pictures after the show!
