You take the cool, innocent look and voice of a tiny japanese girl and mix it with psychopath beats & grooves from a genius-drummer and merry melodies vs. blazing distortion guitars and you have something like Deerhoof. Little Satomi & Co made a great record with "Friend Opportunity". They make pop music most people wouldn't consider as such. It is too weird for my girl (we can only share so many tastes...) and too pop for my highly intellectualized avant-garde-loving friends (god, how boring they can be). I think this is exactly the kind of stuff I like the best: music that is able to appeal on a melodic level and still have a lot of weird elements floating around, not really clashing with the melodies but complementing them to form a good song. They are the kind of band that could be on the Katamari soundtrack I posted about before. They are on a soundtrack, actually: "Dedication", a film by Justin Theroux. What are the chances to catch the film in Brazil ? Close to none...and they wonder why people download so many torrents. I'd be happy to pay for the ticket, goddamit !!! But I digress... When I listen to albums like Friend Opportunity, I always wonder how they can reproduce it live. Must be a lot of work to figure it out. I mean, when you are in the studio, there is so much stuff you can do and experiment with, you actually have to get a grip of yourself and be cautious not to ruin songs by putting too many layers on them. I believe a lot of bands finish mastering the album and then they listen to it and go: "ok, now..how the fuck are we going to do this on stage ?" Digressing a little more, it reminds me of the Tortoise show I went to, almost a year ago. It blew me away because they could play the songs so perfectly and even when they went other directions, it felt like a live remix of their songs. I really recommend going to see them live if you haven't already. Unless you hate them, of course. Does anyone have any cool Deerhoof live experiences ? I've read some interesting stuff on other MOG's...but, hey...I'm always curious. Let's hear it from Deerhoof:

Wonderful post, ouvintes. Thanks.
Deerhoof is one of my favorite bands bar none. First time I heard them I high-tailed it to their catalog which is incredibly impressive and always always fulfilling. So good.
