WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A workaholic's notes on last night's Great Lake Swimmers show

:http://www.greatlakeswimmers.com1. It was rad!2. Opener "Clay George":http://www.myspace.com/claygeorge is a fox in the way that Caetano Veloso is a fox. By which I mean a silver fox who wears a classy suit. (Also he plays lovely alt-country ballads.)3. Second opener "Great Aunt Ida":http://greatauntida.com/ started with the songs I suggested in "my MOG post":/ookpik/blog_post/30054. Point for me?4. Great Lake Swimmers are charismatic! The singer radiates folky poetry about brothers and daughters and peace, but in a way that makes him seem strong. Point for HIM.5. They are much more rockin' live! E.g., This song, Put There By The Land, sounds mellow and subdued on Ongiara, but for those about to play it in a bar, I salute you.6. The guy wearing glasses in the photo above is the drummer. He has the weirdest drumming style I have ever seen: kind of like riding a bicycle and poking things with sticks. Is his kit extra-short? Maybe his sticks are extra long. In any case: awesome!7. Jon from Great Aunt Ida sat in on lap steel for a bit. Charming. 8. Ida sang harmony on several songs as well. Perfect. She has such a soft, lovely voice.9. It was rad.

  1. SpecialAgentJackass says I really wanted to check them out. I've been sent a couple of there albums and they really didn't do much for me - but I've heard they're much better live. Shame. As for Clay, he's great. except when you leave town and he gets drunk and trashes your back yard.

  4. ookpik says SpecialAgent, that's a shame. At least I get to picture Clay wearing a waistcoat while trashing your yard. And George, that's wacky. I loved The Beans! I made one of my first internet friends by putting The Beans on a mixtape! Where were you that you put out their records? Zum? I can't remember who they were with. Radiogram is also worth checking out if you haven't.

  8. fistula spume says All news to me. I really like the song you posted. I'll put these artists on a list. Nice post. I haven't seen live music in so long I wouldn't know how to enjoy it. Live music totally stinks in my neck of the woods.
