Summer of international psychedelia

Posted over 5 years ago
World Cup fever has gotten me all revved up about '60s Brazilian music again. It helped that Brazil finally put on a spectacle today against Japan (why do I even know that? I am not usually a sports fan). Even these "Nike 'Joga Bonita' ads":http://nikefootball.nike.com/nikefootball/siteshell/index.jsp#,us,0;jogatv,,0,0,0,0 stoked the fires. The soundtrack to "10-year-old Ronaldinho":http://nikefootball.nike.com/nikefootball/index.jsp#,us;jogatv,10,0 sounds a lot like Pipoca Moderna by "Gilberto Gil":http://mog.com/music/Gilberto+Gil (not the same song... and probably actually a whole genre that I don't know the name of). I've had Umbabarauma by "Jorge Ben":http://mog.com/music/Jorge+Ben on repeat now and then, although I don't think Mog-o-matic has figured that out yet. The "lyrics":http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/p/pontadelancaafricanoumbabarauma.shtml crack me up every time (Joga bola, jogador... Play ball, footballer!).But. This has reminded me that I was going to try for a summer of international psychedelic rock. At first I thought that only Brazil had a crazy psychedelic movement, as far as non-English-speaking countries went. But lately I've discovered a deep well of Turkish music too. "Erkin Koray":http://mog.com/music/Erkin+Koray, "Apaslar":http://mog.com/music/Apaslar, "Mogollar":http://mog.com/music/Mogollar. And there is no shortage of psychedelic Bollywood. It's a lot of fun to hear psychedelia built on something other than blues foundations-- it makes American and British psychedelia sound like ethnic music too! It's the ethnic music based on blues instead of, say, samba.I'm trying to figure out how to hunt for other countries with 1960s psych gems, preferably complete with radical politics and jail terms. This is kind of a hard thing to search for-- not a lot of linking between different kinds of international psychedelia. So I'm going to try tagging up this blog post, to see if that helps in my quest.

  1. Kate says Don't forget about the insanely large amount of psychedelia from Africa. A good place to start is the Luaka Bop label. I really like their World Psychedelic Classics Vol.3: the Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa. See also Fela Kuti and the Hugh Masekela album "The Emancipation of Ooga-Booga".

  2. ookpik says Ah yes! Thanks, Kate! Somehow it hadn't occurred to me that Luaka Bop dealt outside of South America. Their Os Mutantes reissues started this whole fascination for me.

  3. Pete Black says The Brasil-Japan match got me playing "Camisa 10 da Gavea" since Zico was sitting there coaching on the sidelines. And I'm sure Jorge had himself a fine time watching Ronaldo pound in two goals as the champs showed their form for the first time this cup...

  7. Adam Cottle says try some of the "thai beat a go-go" comps. not exactly "psychedelic," but i think you'll enjoy it just the same. the luaka bop comp kate mentioned is a worthwhile investment if you have not picked it up already.

  8. Timothy Ritter says I'm on a similar quest my dear... maybe not so much the political types though. There are a lot of Korean Psych reissues lately like "Go Go Sound 71" and lots of stuff by Shin Jung Hyun. Those are great. Also Chile & Argentina had huge scenes that should be tapped into more but have some great reissues by the likes of Billy Bond & Relax. As for the sound you are digging on in Brazil you should check out the Paulo Bagunça e a Tropa Maldita LP from 73'. Or some of the Ronnie Von stuff too. I think you would like that...
