Music Docs + Young@Heart

Some muusic docs I've recently enjoyed:

- "The Shield Around the K" is the inspiring story of K Records and the Olympia community. For fans of K, mostly.

- "Looking for a Thrill" features 100 musicians letting us know what inspired them in the first place. This is like 300 minutes long, so a bit overwhelming.

- "Metal - a Headbangers Journey" provides a history of metal and interviews with lotsa metal musicians. But the best footage is swiped from Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

- "Off the Charts - the Song-Poem story" is about regular folks who send their poetry to Nashville, kinda hoping for a record deal. Quite hilarious and normalizing.

Mog is great because people talk about the strangest stuff... A couple weeks ago, a good mogger mentioned an upcoming music doc about a group of geriatrics who tour the world singing rock songs! Here's a nice clip... Young@Heart... covering... Sonic Youth...

Remember 1981? Some things I cannot forget...

Blondie rapping in Rapture (hmm.. is that why it's called Rap-ture?). the song's basically stuck in my head all these years, so memorable and mysterious... "You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too.. Mercurys and Subarus.." ..early rapping was hilarious ..

Also, the Great Space Coaster brought the neat cartoon, Monsieur Linea, to American TV... I could never forget this character, partly because he makes strange sense... but also because he keeps falling off an undrawn line, thanks to his cruel/benevolent Italian creator. And - nice news - soundtrack is available! The original theme song is fantastic! Other times I'm reminded of Raymond Scott and Vince Guaraldi

I found out about mog.com by chance yesterday, because I was surfing for details about Deerhoof's show in Montreal last night.

Have you seen this band? Holy moly! Schizophrenic epileptic metronomic harmony - plus the kind of earnestness you usually find in infants. Deerhoof rocks my socks!

Mog rocks my socks, too. A veritable goldmine of music information created by music lovers like you.

Like you, I love music. I also love documentary film. Combine two of our favourite pasttimes and we get documentary films about music - woohoo!

Recent pleasures: - The Devil and Daniel Johnston - Freestyle - the Art of Rhyme - Tom Dowd and the Language of Music

Here's hoping "You're Gonna Miss Me" - the new Roky Erickson doc - will get some distro so we can watch it soon, too!
