MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(93)

What a distinctive man and a true mensch. My brother reminded me that I have my own Paul Newman memory. One day when I was about 10 years old my family and I went to Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. I saw this man who was wearing big aviator glasses (it was the 70s, ya know?) with a huge orange rain poncho with hood on, literally covering his entire body and face. I turned to my Mom and said, "There's Paul Newman." And sure enough it was (it was validated because Joanne Woodward was standing in line next to him!). Here's an example of why his death, I think has hit so many, so hard (even though given his deteriorating health it seemed inevitable):

For his part, Newman put it all down to luck. In his 1992 introduction to our book about the camp, he tried to explain what impelled him to create the Hole in the Wall: "I wanted, I think, to acknowledge Luck: the chance of it, the benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others; made especially savage for children because they may not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."

You can't get more gracious than that.

Rest in Peace you Legend, you.

i know...this country needs more people we can truly be proud of, and now one of the good ones had to go. i used to drive by his house almost every day when I lived in westport, and I was always like.."there's Paul newman's house!" every time, like big proud mom. his poor kids & joanne, what a huging gaping chasm left where he used to be.

the thing I love about him the most is how much he gave when he could have been like everyone else in Hollywood. He did not make a scene about it as well, instead he chose to live his life while doing his best to make the world a better place. for that alone I will always hold him close to my heart

totally. he had class. the old-school kind. he was the closest thing I can think of to a Boddisatva. A rough-around-the -edges one. But that just made him more endearing.

didnt hurt that he was what every guy wanted to be, and what every woman wanted to come home to. My own mother told me today that the reason she found my dad so attractive was the fact he looked very similar to Paul Newman.

What a mix of talent, guts, humility, kindness, and good humor! We seldom see his like, and I fear we won't again for a while. A few of us got together late last night after the usual weekend hijinks, and only then heard the news. I made a bunch of pasta with Newman's Own sauce - the spicy variety - on top in his honor. We toasted his life and legacy with chianti. Shine on, Paul.
