Melancholy Tune Tuesday

Posted over 3 years ago

My Dede (Russian for 'Grandfather') introduced me to the story of the Romanov Dynasty when I was a teenager. It was the perfect story for an angsty teen... full of mystery, tragedy, war, oppulence (hello? Faberge Eggs!), delicate, regal and haunted looking princesses, violent murder and it was all true! The story around the youngest Grand Duchess Anastasia and the tragic woman who claimed to be her has always haunted me. The story of Anna Anderson has inspired a number of books (I've read em all), and a melancholy song by The Innocence Mission captures the tone of a woman who suffered through life without an identity. Plus, it got me thinking...there's gotta be other songs that were inspired by historical figures and events, right? Right!

I cannot believe no one mentioned **Rock The Casbah**

       >>>And its such a cool story too.  In the first months of the Iranian Iraqi war the Iranian airforce scored several decisive victories over the iraqis.  So the Ayatollah himself went out to congratulate his pilots.  Al his pilots were western educated, rocknrollin' hashpipe passin' infidels!  The Ayatollah ordered all his pilots arrested and sent to "retraining camps".  While they were being "retrained"  Saddam Huesein sent what was left of his airforce and destroyed almost the whole iraqi air force as it sat on the ground because no one who knew how to flythe jets.

dang! i love that song and had no idea it's origins. I also love the pre-disco BeeGees New York Mining Disaster 1941. So heart-rending, those harmonies.
