Thanks again to the ever clever metafilter (for the bajillionth time) for this (go now! ----->)pleasant diversion. I thought and thought and thought about it (and the snow continued to fall) and had to pick an early R.E.M record, Reckoning. And you know what? It holds up. And that means either my music taste hasn't evolved much in 25 years...or R.E.M is awfully good. What's your pick of an enduring record? Come on, humor me...I'm stuck in a damn snowstorm!

Both-my music taste is still much the same as it was twenty something years ago or maybe the criteria i use to decide whether i like something hasn't changed and yes REM are a great band.
Of course it does....(hold up) and i'd say evolution is something you are part of as far as your musical tastes go!
Now as far as your home there in the photo i'd say you're getting back to your roots as well...but i do think it needs a window you and Arden can sit at.
Maybe a dormer or two?
Nice song Karen!
Yummy! Glad you like my stupid house. winter is stupid. see? I haven't matured! :-) But what's you record pick? Yer FAVE! (and arden likes the snow...the traitor.) you guys snowed in too?
Who said anything about the damn house being stupid???
I think it's marvelous dahling! (feels like home)
Snowed in under and frozen up solid. Cold that constantly reminds you to keep moving lest you die at the side of the road.
My first one? Abbey Road. and i still love it today.
But i never thought i'd listen to a band that had a synth as a main instrument and i'm all over that stuff like ducks on junebugs so i have to say change is always good. (you just don't know it 'til you let go)
Hey wait! Did you make that igloo?
Nice job...Did Arden move in there or something causing you to despise the white stuff even more?
I can't believe you posted that video and it stopped right at George (my favorite Beatle's face!). Good choice of records... Abbey Road feels like a part of my DNA.
SO, you like my frozen little home? I built Arden a little igloo dog house, she loves it! :-) (yeah, right. Like I spent any more that 15 minutes total outside today!)
mitchy-what record holds up best in your collection?
Nothing by chance huh Karen? I picked that one because it had George's face on it! I don't know about you but whenever i see a photo of him it always has a positive effect on me....weird huh?
Awesome DNA ya got there K!
Hmmm here's an instuctional video just in case you have an extra hour or so to make one. I imagine Arden would be more than willing to pitch in a paw or four on the project.
snow is fun, getting stuck is not. No snow today here in MN, just a lot of cold and frankly I am ready for the spring
Reckoning is such a solid record; I could go listen to it now and be instantly transported to my dad's house, with the Walkman on and my duped copy of that album going on and on.
I'd have to go with U2's live Under A Blood Red Sky album. I got that after a friend in HS taped the concert on MTV, and we watched it every day after school for weeks on end. And yes, it absolutely holds up. Bono and the band aare at the peak of their live powers, and have mastered the art of making the political personal.
I love it when i hear someone says a song or a record takes them back to a place and a time.
Sign of a die hard music lover Dale!
And you got a two-fer on that last comment. ;)
Nice one! Mine is Garbage's Garbage (hehe). It still holds up, it managed to tattoo itself in my veins.
Evolution is overrated ;)
Yummy: I was going to go out and start an igloo using that handy & awesome vid but it was too COLD OUT and the snow was all fluffy and soft! So I am inside drinking coffee and buying songs on itunes.
Rawk: I completely agree w/you...I love when a song can transport us back to a place in time and R.E.M does that for me.
Dale: So does U2 as a matter of fact, the record War. And now that Sean Penn is done with his Harvey Milk performance, maybe he should get on board a U2 biopic and play Bono!
Anna, darling...thanks for that Garbage reminder...I love them, too. Some people's Garbage is another's treasure!
And if anyone is looking for a really good book to hunker down with this winter, I reccommend The Terror by Dan Simmons:
"6 words: Engrossing. Cold. Starvation. Horror. History. Myth."

Reckoning is still my numero uno fave R.E.M. album - yet it's been quite a while. Most excellent song choice, ongo. It's transporting me, but not to the past...
Mike-I lost my REM CDs and tapes long ago and have been slowly collecting them back via MP3s. After hearing Reckoning again, it was like I'd been listening all along! Those songs stayed with me!
