The Mellifluous Mellotron

Posted over 4 years ago
I had no idea that I love the sound of the "mellotron":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellotron. Turns out It plays a part in a bunch of songs I have loved for years, like The Court of King Crimson, The Left Banke's music, and most recently tracks in PJ Harvey's new haunting (and I really mean haunting, people!) record. I seriously love what I've heard so far, it gives me the chills, in a good way.

  1. Jonh Ingham says Not to mention the haunting start to Strawberry Fields Forever. Hmmmm, 'haunting' seems the de facto adjective to describe the Mellotron, doesn't it?

  2. ongoingly says It DOES! My favorite song on PJ Harvey's record is Silence...is that the mellotron playing on it? ~wu9huuf3Oro.mp3~

  3. Jonh Ingham says I don't hear it, thjo there is some serious studio work in that track!...it sounds like a lot of vocal tracking that might be being played through a keyboard and near the end it's more like a Fairlight or whatever the modern version is. Basically an updated Mellotron but using a computer harddrive instead of the tape loops that a mellotron used.
