WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

F#%@!cking amazing and prolific bands I'd never heard of until now Friday

Okay, I am so mortified. After being royally skooled yet again by the boys from "Sound Opinions":http://www.soundopinions.com/shownotes/2007/090707/shownotes.html on "The Mekons":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mekons I am vacillating between wanting to crawl under a rock and jumping for joy. Where have I been for 30 odd years? Apparently they even have a "new record":http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/45020-natural out, like their 900th. Oy. Where was I, indeed.

  1. Marigold says I personally take great pride that there are thousands of great bands that I have heard of and just not gotten a chance to check out this being one of them. This sounds pretty good. In regard to that first song I think I now know where Art Brut got their sound from. The Mekons called and they want their sound back. har har har. Anyways, thanks this was a pretty fun song. Both songs were pretty dang good.

  2. ongoingly says Hey Marigold, good call on the Art Brut influence! The Mekons have so many styles & have been around for so long, I'll bet they've influenced a ton of bands I've heard (and never heard) before.

  3. Marigold says it is kind of weird. Growing up and really starting to discover my love for music was in the mid to late 80's. Unfortunatly in a very conservative Christian household. I really lost a lot of time getting to know some of the essential roots music that I am finding now. While I was listening to Petra and Michael W. Smith and Whiteheart I was missing out on some great music. I remember the first time I was kind of "bad" and listened to some "secular" music. REM's Document will forever be called the gateway drug that got me out of only listening to Christian music. For God's sake I just within the last 5 years realised that the Beatles are awesome and not just another shitty band on the classic rock station. I am seriously behind the eight ball when it comes to this type of music. I guess, better late then never. But I do find it embarrassing sometimes telling people I am just discovering bands like Echo and the Bunnymen and The Beatles or The Velvet Underground. It is hillarious now for me to listen the bands that I thought were so "cutting edge" in the 90's and now come to find out they were totally influenced by what I used to consider to be the evil classic rock. Damn I am hard headed sometimes. I think I got that from my Mom. Oh well. What can I do but keep pressing on and finding my own musical journey.

  4. ongoingly says wow, that must have been an intense growing up experience. did you guys listen to Gospel? I love Gospel. I didn't really get to know the Beatles until my friend who had 2 older brothers turned me onto them when I was about 12. I was raised Unitarian in the 70's that was a pretty hippy-dippy faith - and my parents were pretty open-minded about music. They were both music lovers mostly show tunes and AOR music, but my Dad did buy me a Queen record to celebrate our baseball team's winning the chamionship (We Are the Champions)! I dont really know how I found out about new music when I was a kid, I can't remember the sources. Probably word of mouth, radio play, I dunno. I do remember when I was a teenager racing down my friend's driveway blaring The Pretenders new record on my car's tape deck and being SO excited to share it with my pals. It does boggle my mind when I find out about bands like the Mekons NOW and it turns out they have been around for so long. The Internet has been such an amazing educational tool for me in so many areas. I like how you put it.. a musical journey.

  5. Marigold says Actually, there are a lot of great Christian bands that I still listen to to this day. Great bands like Starflyer 59, The Chior, Lassie Foundation, Adam Again, Pedro the Lion to name a few have some Christian music scene ties. Gospel? Hell yeah. (I love saying hell yeah, when commenting on Christian music) I still to this day love espescially black gospel mass choir style gospel music. I recently did a post on the Staples Singers as well. SO yeah, I still listen to and follow it to a certian degree. I guess what I really detest is the "contemporary" Christian music. The most "intense" and sad thing I had to do when my parents became born again was throw away my Marvel Star Wars comic book collection. Man that sucked. bad, real bad.

  6. Marigold says Did I say how much it sucked throwing away my Star Wars comic book collection? I mean that sucked bad as a kid. You know, because the Force is demonic. Shit that was one expensive throwing away session. I should make my parents pay me back for re-buying all those comics as an adult. That was not cheap.

  7. ongoingly says Pedro the Lion is Christian rock? I did not know that. But that makes sense actually, since the guy who turned me onto them was raised Fundamentalist Christian. Huh. I like Jars of Clay. I am a Buddhist and like the chanting but can't understand a word they are saying.. but I really do like to hear the positive lyrics in Christian rock/Gospel celebrating good things like fellowship and love and stuff. I seriously cannot listen to the Staples singers without getting choked up. Can you recommend any black gospel mass choirs to me? I would love to listen to more.

  9. Marigold says I am sure David Bazan (pedro the lion) would not appreciate the tag and actually he does not fit the standard Christian music tag, but if you ever really listen to that guys lyrics this is a man that is a Christian and really struggles with some of Christianity's fundemnetal beliefs. He really just lays straight out from his heart the whole mess that he is. It really is some great music. A lot of the things he sings about really are things I can relate to as a Christian. His struggles with different things etc. Listen to the lyrics for Slow and Steady Wins the Race from Winners Never Quit sometime. Wow, that is some deep stuff. In regard to your mass choir request. Here are a few that come to mind: Georgia Mass Choir Denver Mass Choir Kirk Franklin

  10. ongoingly says thanks for posting that.. it's been a few years since I've listened to PTL (Pedro the Lion = Praise the Lord, maybe?) Anyhoo, thanks also for the Gospel recommendations- it'll be good to hear some new gospel voices!
