The Roots rock The Tower

Posted about 5 years ago
I've seen The Roots perform about a half a dozen times (Milwaukee, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia etc.), but I have to say that I have never enjoyed one of their shows more than their March 30th show at The Tower in Philadelphia. While the Radio City Music Hall show was amazing in it's own right...as far as their performance goes, this was as electric as I've seen. The addition of the horn section was tremendous, and since Captain Kirk joined the band, I've always thought that he brings an impressive element to the band with his ability to sing. They were obviously filming the show and if this concert ever finds it's way to DVD, I'll be first in line to buy it. The highlight of the show, for me, was the band's version of Bob Dylan's "Masters Of War", which was (very appropriately) set to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner, and also mixed in elements of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun" (not sure if he was the original artist, but that's the only version I've heard). Simply tremendous.
