A few people on mog have asked me about the avatar's i've been using over the past few months here's a brief explanation

The Superlambanana has been situated in various places around the city centre, Its home for the forseeable future is on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Vauxhall Road in Liverpool City Centre.

The 17 foot critter started life on the Strand and served as both a timely warning about the dangers of GM foods and also as a reminder to the days when the Port of Liverpool’s main import was bananas and main export, lambs.

Created by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo in 1998, the superlambanana initially had a mixed response but the now iconic sculpture has since become synonymous with the city of Liverpool, with both locals and tourists taking to it like a duck to water. It is now much loved with any talk of it being removed being fiercely opposed. It has been many different colours and designs in its time. It’s been turned pink for charity before now.

Us Scousers love him (or perhaps her) so much that as part of our city’s European Capital of Culture celebrations we decided to make over one hundred of them. Displayed in various locations around the city during the summer of 2008, they will be auctioned off for charity on 10 September. Each one has been designed to represent something different and it truly is a joy to drive round Liverpool spotting these little creatures that are situated in such places as half way up a building and in the middle of busy roundabouts. Thers's even one in London at Euston Station (so when we go to london there's a frendly face to greet us)

One of my favorite songs by the great one

Cinnamon Girl by Prince, from his 2004 album Musicology. Besides the title, there is no connection to the song of the same name by Neil Young.

Under the covers on sunday (paul young covers joy division)

Although a fairly faithful cover, Paul Young goes for soul and passion over Joy Division's bleak monotone.

Paul Young, a former welder from Luton formed a band in the late 1970s called the Q-Tips. They, like so many bands of that time, split up when they were on the verge of stardom. He went on to become part of "punk experimentalists", Streetband, and scored a minor hit with the novelty track, Toast in 1981.

Two years later, he went solo and recorded his phenomenally successful debut No Parlez. The first track lifted from it, a cover of Marvin Gaye's Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) became his first and only UK number one. Subsequent releases failed to match both the single and album's success and by 1988 the hits had dried up save for another visit to the top ten in 1991 with Zuccero on Sensa Una Donna.

He was a victim on This Is Your Life in 1999 and an appearance on an upcoming series of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here surely beckons.

Crowded House (with Johnny Marr) @ Liverpool Summer Pop's

Last nite went to see Crowded House at the Liverpool Echo Arena and they put on a fantastic gig playing all the hits and afew newer ones. For the encore they were joined onstage by Johnny Marr, and preformed The Smiths Classic There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

i found a clip on youtube (not the best) but worth checking out

the support group was a new group (to me) from liverpool called Voo

again have found a video on youtube so check them out

also enclosing review from Liverpool Echo (local paper)

THE Kiwis certainly brought the weather with them last night.

As the rain poured on Liverpool last night, inside the ECHO Arena was bathed in the warmest of glows.

Singer Neil Finn positively emits sunshine. So much so that he ought to give lessons in how to be a frontman.

Aside from the fact that he’s breathtakingly, eyewateringly, heartmeltingly good, he also has the wonderful gift of loving every second on stage. He manages to sing 20-year- old songs like it’s the very first time, packing every second with sheer joy.

With his cheery Kiwi banter, he manages to make the 10,000 seat ECHO arena feel like he’s singing in your living room. And he wants to hear you sing along, too.

"Did you bring your voices with you tonight?" he asked the packed crowd of devotees. Liverpool certainly had. As he launched into Fall Of Your Feet, Weather With You, It’s Only Natural and Don’t Dream It’s Over, the throng sang along with every word in a full-on, hairs up on the back of your neck gesture of solidarity.

And in true Glastonbury form, Neil unleashed his trademark genial subversion, chatting to the crowd like old mates and asking the security guards to let people stand up and dance.

The band sounded sublime, and Neil was in superb voice showing, with a two-hour show packing in 22 songs, how his rich, mellow tones only get better with age.

Add in excellent support from fellow Kiwi Don McGlashan – joined for a duet by Neil Finn at one point – and Liverpool band Voo and it was the highlight in the Summer Pops season.

But then there was the icing on the cake: the encore from heaven. Neil brought on his old mate Johnny Marr for a cover of The Smiths There is A Light That Never Goes Out, followed by Weather With You. It was a hard act to follow, but follow it they did. After the audience refused to budge they returned for a second encore, with everyone on their feet.

A two-hour set, two great support bands, two encores and a standing ovation. This was something special.

its official....... liverpool is britain's most musical city

Liverpool, which is home to acts like The Beatles, The Zutons and Cilla Black, has been named Britain's most musical city.

Ten cities have been competing over six weeks for the title, that was voted for by the public.

Liverpool, this year's European Capital of Culture, scooped the top spot ahead of Sheffield, birth place of Arctic Monkeys and Pulp.

Manchester, whose acts include Oasis, the Stone Roses, The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division, the Happy Mondays, and Take That, came third.

29th part of my ongoing look at the music that made liverpool great.
liverpool bands have produced some of the best music ever,
every week i’m going to post a song/video from a group or singer from liverpool some popular and some not so popular
this week it’s The Wombats

The Wombats - Let's Dance to Joy Division

The Wombats are a three-piece indie band from Liverpool, England. They comprise two native Liverpudlians; front man Matthew Murphy, provider of vocals, guitar and keyboards, drummer and b-vocalist Dan Haggis and bass and additional vocalist Tord í˜verland-Knudsen, a Norwegian who has made his home in the city.

The three met at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The school gave them the chance to play gigs to over 20,000 people in China. This was one of the band's first trips to play outside the UK. They spent their time traveling around the country in a Vauxhall Agila. And spent most of their time drunk as quoted by the band while on the Colin Murray show in 2007. Their debut single "Lost in the Post"/"Party in a Forest (Where's Laura)" was released at the end of 2006. They also released an album in Japan called Girls, Boys and Marsupials.

The band then released a second limited edition vinyl called "Moving to New York" in January, 2007. This single got critical acclaim from Radio DJs such as Colin Murray and Zane Lowe. In May, the band released their third single called "Backfire at the Disco" leading the band to released their first full single "Kill the Director" in late July. The single managed to reach #35 in the UK Singles Chart. Their last single "Let's Dance to Joy Division" was released in October 2007, to coincide with the release of their debut album, entitled The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation which managed to get to #11 in the UK album charts. The release was being followed by a European tour ending with a Christmas party at Liverpool Academy.

The band started 2008 by being the opening act at the opening ceremony of Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008 at Liverpool Arena."Moving to New York" was re-released on 14 January 2008 and reached #13 UK singles chart becoming their highest charting release to date. The band are set to go on a full UK tour over late April and May 2008, as well as playing dates in Australia, the United States and Europe in March and early April. The band also played for Jo Wiley on BBC Radio 1 where they covered the Take That song "Patience", as well as Tord singing the Postman Pat theme tune in his native language, Norwegian.

i read this on the bbc website yesterday

Blind Canadian rock musician Jeff Healey has died in a Toronto hospital aged 41 from a rare form of cancer, his publicist has said.
Healey, famed for playing his electric guitar flat on his lap, died of retinoblastoma which claimed his sight when he was a one-year-old-child.

His 1988 album See The Light was nominated for a Grammy award and sold one million copies in the US.

Healey's latest album was due to be released in Canada on Monday.

Blues rock release Mess of Blues is expected to become available in the US and around Europe later this month and in April.

'Remarkable'

He was also due to appear on Later With Jools Holland and tour the UK and Germany.

His publicist Richard Flohil told broadcaster CTV: "Jeff was an intriguing player to watch, because he played guitar - by any conventional standard - all wrong, with it flat across his lap."
But he was a remarkable, a virtuoso player," he added.

Colin Bray, a member of Healey's band who was at his bedside when he died, said: "I don't think any of us thought this was going to happen.

"We just thought he was going to bounce back like he always does."

Healey played with blues legend BB King and recorded with Mark Knopfler and the late George Harrison.

He was also a lover of jazz, and hosted radio shows in Canada where he would play music from his record collection, which numbered more than 30,000.

Last year, he underwent cancer surgery on his lungs and legs and had chemotherapy.

The musician is survived by his wife Christie and two children.

musical advent calender (window 24...."It's Chriiiiiiist-maaaaaaaaaaas!")

A MERRY XMAS TO ALL MOGGER'S EVERYWHERE

At number 1 Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody
ok not everyone's favourite.
this and the Pogues are both classic's but one of them had to be number 1

This was based on a psychedelic song, "My Rocking Chair," which Noddy Holder wrote in 1967. In 1973 the Slade vocalist decided to convert it into a Christmas song after a night out drinking at a local pub. He and the band's bass player and co-writer Jimmy Lea camped out at Noddy's mother's house and got down to changing the lyrics to make them more Christmassy. Jimmy Lea incorporated into the verse parts of another song which he was then writing and Noddy re-wrote the words incorporating different aspects of the Christmas holiday season as they came to mind.

When Noddy Holder wrote the line "Look to the future now, it's only just begun," he had in mind the strikes that were blighting Britain at the time. He told the Daily Mail On Sunday November 10, 2007: "We'd decided to write a Christmas song and I wanted to make it reflect a British family Christmas. Economically, the country was up the creek. The miners had been on strike, along with the gravediggers, the bakers and almost everybody else. I think people wanted something to cheer them up - and so did I. That's why I came up with the line."

This went straight in at #1 in the UK, selling over 300,000 copies on the day of its release, making it at the time the fastest ever selling record in Britain. It eventually became Slade's best ever selling single in the UK, selling over a million copies.
The harmonium used on this is the same one that John Lennon used on his Mind Games album, which was being recorded at the studio next door.
This was recorded at the Record Plant studios in New York while the band were on a tour of The States in the summer of 1973. When they recorded the vocals, they sang the chorus on the stairs in order to achieve the echo that they required.
Producer Chas Chandler opened the song with a howl recorded during some of Noddy Holder's vocal exercises.
In the UK this has become a standard, and it is usually reissued in its original form each Christmas. On several occasions the song has re-entered the Top 40.

Ok down to the last 2, love both of them.
There both classic's
So at number 2 The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York

After their second album Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, The Pogues wanted to release a Christmas single. Instead of a cover song, lead singer Shane MacGowan and banjo player Jem Finer decided to write one themselves. The first attempts to record this were as a duet with MacGowan and Pogues bass player Cait O'Riordan. They didn't have the song ready for a Christmas single, so they recorded it for their third album, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, which was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Lillywhite took tapes home and had his wife, Kirsty MacColl record a scratch vocal, but her voice was so good that they decided to keep it.
At first, this song had lyrics about a sailor and a distant ocean, but Finer's wife suggested he change it to be about a couple at Christmas who are hard on their luck. Finer wrote another song and took both to MacGowan, who combined the melody of the first with the story line of the second.
In 2004 VH1 poll, this was voted the UK's favorite Christmas song of all time.
Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas Day.
The title was taken from a book called A Fairytale of New York, by James Patrick (JP) Donleavy.
This single has been re-released several times for the UK Christmas market. In 2005 it was re-issued to publicize a new campaign for an investigation into the death of Kirsty McColl on December 18, 2000.

under the cover's on sunday (xmas special The Alarm - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

The Alarm cover John Lennon's classic

The Alarm is an alternative rock band that emerged from Wales in the early 1980s. It started as a local punk band with a spirited, energetic acoustic/folk influence, stayed together for ten years, and landed 7 top 10 singles - the most memorable of which is "The Stand." The Alarm incorporated elements of punk, folk, new wave, roots rock, and classic rock, and, unusually for a rock band, displayed marked influences from Welsh language and culture. By opening for acts such as U2 and Bob Dylan, they became a popular alternative rock band of the 1980's, retaining a loyal following to the present day.

For generations, The Twelve Days of Christmas has been a Yuletide tradition. But have you ever stopped to think what would happen if your true love sent you all those gifts? What would you do when seven swans a'swimming and four calling birds try to mix it up with a partridge in a pear tree - in your Iiving room? Or the racket that nine drummers drumming and ten pipers piping would make on the front lawn? And what would happen when the twelve maidens dancing turned up for the party?
Frank Kelly's Christmas Countdown is the story of one unfortunate fellow whose true love let her ardor get the better of her; he was inundated with gifts for twelve nights to the detriment of the health of his aging mother and his own sanity. The hilarious results landed this record in the Top Twenty Singles Charts in England and Ireland.

musical advent calender (window 22 white christmas L.A style)

I'm a bit late with this one, what with going the match and then drinking after got a bit of a hangover.
At number 3 Darlene Love – White Christmas

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten, and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow, snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Spoken:
The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There's never been such a day, in old L.A.
But it's December the 24th, and I'm longing to be up north
So I can have my very own white Christmas

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
Yea, be white

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) is a song by John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono. It was recorded at Record Plant Studios in New York City in late October of 1971, with the help of producer Phil Spector. It features soaring, heavily echoed vocals, and a sing-along chorus. The children singing in the background were from the Harlem Community Choir and are credited on the song's single.

Although the song is a protest song about the Vietnam War, it has become a Christmas standard and has appeared on several Christmas albums.

Saint Etienne is an English indie dance act, fronted by Sarah Cracknell (born April 12, 1967, Chelmsford, Essex). Former music journalists Bob Stanley (born December 25, 1964) and Pete Wiggs (born May 15, 1966) are the other regular members of the band. They are named after the famous French football team, AS Saint-Étienne, European Cup runners-up in the 1970s.

The Waitresses were an experimental New Wave band in the early 1980s from Kent, Ohio, United States. The group was led by Chris Butler, although lead vocals were performed by Patty Donahue, who died of lung cancer on 9 December 1996.

Struggling post-punk band the Waitresses dragged themselves off the road and into a Manhattan studio to record - of all things - a Christmas song on a hot August day in 1981. Little did they know they were about to create a classic - a song that would well outlive the band, the 80s and, sadly, the frontwoman who sang it.

"I go back and I try to think of what the original inspiration was. I think it was just very much that for years I hated Christmas," says Hoboken resident Chris Butler, founder of the Waitresses and writer of the bittersweet, cool but sentimental Christmas Wrapping

This blend of anti-war protest and brass band arrangements has become a Christmas radio standard in Britain. The song is set in the Front during the Great War where a soldier in a trench wishes he was home for Christmas.

Jona Lewie told the Daily Express on March 12, 2005: "The soldier in the song is a bit like the eternal soldier at the Arc de Triomphe, but the song actually had nothing to do with Christmas when I wrote it. There is one line about him being on the front and missing his girlfriend: 'I wish I was at home for Christmas.' The record company picked up on that from a marketing perspective, and added a tubular bell. The song went to number three in the UK, and topped the charts in several European countries."

Lewie, whose real name is John Lewis, first hit the UK charts as a member of Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs with their 1972 #2 hit "Seaside Shuffle." In 1980 he returned to the UK charts with the #16 hit "You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties" before hitting the #3 spot later in the year with this song. Though he failed to chart in the UK again, his follow up single, "Lousie (We Get It Right)" was a hit in other territories including South Africa, where it topped the charts.

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday is a popular Christmas song in the UK, first released in 1973 by Wizzard, when it reached #4 in the singles chart, famously beaten to #1 by Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody which remained there for five consecutive weeks. As with all Wizzard songs, it was penned and produced by Roy Wood, who played most (if not all) of the instruments too.

The song features the lead vocals of frontman Roy Wood but also contains backing vocals by The Suedettes as well as The Stockland Green Bilateral School First Year School, with additional noises being produced by "Miss Snob and Class 3C", as credited on the sleeve.

Many children actually thought that Roy Wood was indeed Santa Claus as he had the white hair and beard in the music video.

On a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
One-horse open sleigh.

Jingle bells, Batman smells,
Robin laid an egg
Batmobile lost its wheel
And Joker got away

A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride,
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank,
And there we got upsot.

Chorus
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

Now the ground is white
Go it while you're young,
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
Two-forty as his speed
Hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride

The only original song on the classic Phil Spector Christmas album, it's arguably more of a Christmas blues song than "Merry Christmas Baby." Darlene Love's singing makes this one tough to cover, but in recent years many new versions have been done

At number 13 Squeeze - Christmas Day

Christmas Day was a holiday single released by Squeeze in 1979. The single was released only in the United Kingdom, and failed to chart, a major surprise since the band had had consecutive number two hits earlier that year. The song itself was not included on an album, but appeared between the releases of Cool for Cats and Argybargy.

Mary and Joseph drove into town,
Searching for a place to stay.
The moon was up, and his foot was down
A miracle was on its way.
They tried the hotels, the motels, the bed-and-breakfast
Locals, but no one seemed to have any room.
Better find a double room soon!
Chorus:
So where would Christmas be without...
Mary and Joseph?
Morecambe And Wise?
Laurel and Hardy?
Cracker Surprise?
Lights on the pine tree?
And more aftershave?
I'm not forgetting Jesus who was born on Christmas Day!
They found a place with the neon lights
TV, Pool, and Vacancies
The man at the desk didn't hear them right
When the two of them booked for three.
They watched the TV
And deeply, she thought about the needing
Of the heavens to deliver this way
And it happened on Christmas Day
Christmas Daaaaaaaaaaaaaay..
Christmas Daaaaaaaaaaaaaay..
Chorus
Mary and Joseph were so surprised
With admirers around the crib
There was something in their son's eyes
They identically took one in.
Like a Messiah, and a Fire
Like the tread around a tire
That grip all roads
It's to bond you there.
And it happened on Christmas Day!
Christmas daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
Christmas daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
Chorus,

At number 14 Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas
Gregory Stuart Lake is an English bassist, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer, best known as a founding member of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Lake wrote this as an objection to the commercialism of Christmas. He was concerned that the true spirit of Christmas was being lost in the marketing of the holiday.

The part at the end is based on "Lieutenant Kije Suite" by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Keith Emerson came up with the idea to use it.

Pete Sinfield, who wrote lyrics for many Emerson, Lake And Palmer songs, helped write this.

Lake was surprised this was a hit. Many people misinterpreted it as an anti-religious song, and he thought it wouldn't go over well as a single.

Little Saint Nick is a Christmas song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, performed by The Beach Boys and first featured on their 1964 album The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. The song borrows its rhythm and structure from the group's 1963 hit "Little Deuce Coupe".

Several different versions of the song exist, including a single version that reached number 3 on the Christmas chart in 1964 and a version included on John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together. Some versions of the song include an xylophone while others don't. The song is also used in a Coca-Cola holiday commercial featuring a family of polar bears who stumble upon a festive penguin gathering.

At number 17 Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

Band Aid was the name of the group which recorded the original single "Do They Know It's Christmas? / Feed The World". Written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the song was recorded on November 25th 1984 by a group consisting of almost 40 of the UK and Ireland's best-known pop stars of the time. Originally Geldof hoped to raise £72,000 for charities from sales of the single, but that estimate was exceeded almost immediately the record went on sale; it went on to sell over three million copies in the UK, becoming the best-selling record ever, and to raise over
£8 million worldwide.

Lyrics With Performers
(Paul Young)
It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
(Boy George)
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

(George Michael)
But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard
(Simon LeBon)
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
(Sting) And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
(Bono joins in)
The bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that are ringing
Are clanging chimes of doom
(Bono only) Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you.

(Everyone)
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time.
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

(Paul Young)
Here's to you
raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them
underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Chorus (Everyone)
Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Repeat

This hymn’s history is the source of some disagreement. The traditional story is that Mohr and Gruber wrote it in Oberndorf, Austria, on Christmas Eve when they discovered the church organ was broken (different versions say it rusted out, or mice chewed through vital parts). However, recent evidence indicates this may be only folklore. An old manuscript has reportedly been discovered that shows Franz Gruber wrote the score 2-4 years after Mohr wrote the lyrics. Whatever the truth, this carol has been a Christmas favorite for almost 200 years.

This was written in 1932 by Haven Gillespie and J. Fred Coots. They had trouble convincing anyone to produce it because it was seen as a kids song, which would have been very hard to sell.

When Eddie Cantor sang this on his radio show in 1934, it became an instant hit. Coots was a writer for Cantor's show. Cantor was going to pass on the song but was convinced by his wife, Ida, to give it a try.

One of the most successful Christmas song's of all time, it was outsold only by "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "White Christmas."

One of the more popular versions of this is by Bruce Springsteen. He also does a version called "Santa Claus Is Fooling Around," which is about how Santa will steal your lady if you're not careful.

In addition to the version on the single release, another very different cut exists (on CD) with bongos and slide whistles on the rhythm track. Neither have ever appeared on a Kate Bush album, except for the This Womans Work box set but both managed to find their way on to various Christmas compilations in 1989.

Can You Quess What It Is Yet?

Rolf Harris cover's Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven

Rolf Harris came to London in 1952 to study Art. A year later he was appearing on TV as an artist and story-teller and had his first hit as a singer in the early sixties with Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport. After a relatively quiet period in his life in the late seventies, his brother Bruce became his manager and reinvented him. Harris is perhaps best known for his hit song (1969) Two Little Boys. His hero is Val Doonican. Harris enjoys taking photos

He painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as part of her 80th birthday celebrations. It was documented on BBC 1's The Queen, by Rolf

Invented the 'wobble-board' - a musical instrument basically consisting of a large, flexible piece of wood which makes a characteristic oscillating sound when 'wobbled'. This was parodied by The Kinks on their 1969 song 'Australia', which features a wobble-board solo.

musical advent calender (window 1... green christmas by the barenaked ladies)

OK its that time of year again,
so for the next 24 days (footall, pub. and xmas party's permitting) i will be posting a countdown of my favourite xmas songs (some great and some not so good lol) starting at number 24

Advent is the start of the Christmas season in Britain. It begins four Sundays before Christmas.

The first sign of Christmas in a British home is the children's advent calendar. It starts on the first day of December. The calendars are a fun way to help children to know when Christmas Eve will arrive, an important night for them because Father Christmas will visit them bringing gifts.

An Advent calendar is a poster or card with twenty-four small doors, one to be opened each day from December 1 until Christmas Eve. Each door conceals a picture. Every morning children open 1 window of the calendar to see a pretty picture or find a chocolate inside.

This popular tradition arose in Germany in the late 1800s and soon spread throughout Europe and North America. Originally, the images in Advent calendars were derived from the Hebrew Bible.

Many Advent calendars today have no religious content. Now, alongside traditional Advent calendars depicting angels and biblical figures are those whose doors open to display teddy bears, pieces of chocolate, or photos of pop stars. And now MUSIC

under the cover's on sunday (with Bryan Ferry)

Bryan Ferry cover's The Beatles You Won't See Me

Much like his contemporary David Bowie, Ferry consolidated his glam-era success with a covers album, his first full solo effort even while Roxy Music was still going full steam. Whereas Bowie on Pin-Ups focused on British beat and psych treasures, Ferry for the most part looked to America, touching on everything from Motown to the early jazz standard that gave the collection its name. Just about everyone in Roxy Music at the time helped out on the album — notable exceptions being Andy Mackay and Brian Eno. The outrageous take on Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," with Ferry vamping over brassy female vocals, sets the tone for things from the start. All this said, many of the covers aim for an elegant late-night feeling not far off from the well-sculpted Ferry persona of the '80s and beyond, though perhaps a touch less bloodless and moody in comparison. In terms of sheer selection alone, meanwhile, Ferry's taste is downright impeccable. There's Leiber & Stoller via Elvis' "Baby I Don't Care," Lesley Gore's "It's My Party" (with narrative gender unchanged!), Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "The Tracks of My Tears," and more, all treated with affection without undue reverence, a great combination. Ferry's U.K. background isn't entirely ignored, though, thanks to two of the album's best efforts — the Beatles' "You Won't See Me" and the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil." Throughout Ferry's instantly recognizable croon carries everything to a tee, and the overall mood is playful and celebratory. Wrapping up with a grand take on "These Foolish Things" itself, this album is one of the best of its kind by any artist.

it became popular in New Zealand in the 1990s after by its use in a television advertisement for Instant Kiwi scratchcards.

under the cover's on sunday (with Peter Sellers)

Peter Sellers cover's The Beatles - A Hard Days Night in the style of Laurence Olivier's interpretation of Richard III.

Peter Sellers "Lennon & McCartney Sessions" took place at Abbey Road in 1965. Before settling on the tracks that would be the hit single "Help!/A Hard Day's Night" Sellers also tried other Beatle songs in a variety of styles.

there so bad there great (classic crappy #1's..1971)

Alfred Hawthorn Hill aka Benny Hill
Benny's 1971 number 1 Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)

You could hear the hoof beats pound as they raced across the ground,
And the clatter of the wheels as they spun 'round and 'round.
And he galloped into market street, his badge upon his chest,
His name was Ernie, and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

Now Ernie loved a widow, a lady known as Sue,
She lived all alone in Liddley Lane at number 22.
They said she was too good for him, she was haughty, proud and chic,
But Ernie got his cocoa there three times every week.

They called him Ernie, (Ernie), and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

She said she'd like to bathe in milk, he said, "All right, sweetheart,"
And when he'd finished work one night he loaded up his cart.
He said, "D'you want it pasturized? 'Cause pasturized is best,"
She says, "Ernie, I'll be happy if it comes up to my chest."

That tickled old Ernie, (Ernie), and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

Now Ernie had a rival, an evil-looking man,
Called Two-Ton Ted from Teddington and he drove the baker's van.
He tempted her with his treacle tarts and his tasty wholemeal bread,
And when she seen the size of his hot meat pies it very near turned her head.

She nearly swooned at his macaroon and he said, "If you treat me right,
You'll have hot rolls every morning and crumpets every night."
He knew once she sampled his layer cake he'd have his wicked way,
And all Ernie had to offer was a pint of milk a day.

Poor Ernie, (Ernie), and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

One lunch time Ted saw Ernie's horse and cart outside her door,
It drove him mad to find it was still there at half past four.
And as he lept down from his van hot blood through his veins did course,
And he went across to Ernie's cart and didn't half kick his 'orse.

Whose name was Trigger, (Trigger), and he pulled the fastest milk cart in the west.

Now Ernie rushed out into the street, his gold top in his hand,
He said, "If you wanna marry Susie you'll fight for her like a man."
"Oh why don't we play cards for her?" he sneeringly replied,
"And just to make it interesting we'll have a shilling on the side."

Now Ernie dragged him from his van and beneath the blazing sun,
They stood there face to face, and Ted went for his bun.
But Ernie was too quick, things didn't go the way Ted planned,
And a strawberry-flavoured yogurt sent it spinning from his hand.

Now Susie ran between them and tried to keep them apart,
As Ernie, he pushed her aside and a rock cake caught him underneath his heart.
And he looked up in pained surprise and the concrete hardened crust,
Of a stale pork pie caught him in the eye and Ernie bit the dust.

Poor Ernie, (Ernie), and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

Ernie was only 52, he didn't wanna die,
And now he's gone to make deliveries in that milk round in the sky.
Where the customers are angels and ferocious dogs are banned,
And the milkman's life is full of fun in that fairy, dairy land.

But a woman's needs are many fold and Sue, she married Ted,
But strange things happened on their wedding night as they lay in their bed.
Was that the trees a-rustling? Or the hinges of the gate?
Or Ernie's ghostly gold tops a-rattling in their crate?

They won't forget Ernie, (Ernie), and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

Guitarist Simon Austin formed the Melbourne, Australian folk-pop band Frente! in 1991, bringing in Angie Hart, Simon Austin (guitar), Tim O'Connor, and Mark Picton (replaced by Alastair Barden) to round out the lineup. Frente! entered the international spotlight in the summer of 1994 with their quirky acoustic version of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." On the back of that single, Marvin: The Album entered the charts,

for no other reason.... other than i never tire of listening to kate bush
she writes great song's and look's......well so sexy

taken from the Aerial album
my favourite track Nocturn (on the "A Sky of Honey" side)

Sweet dreams...

On this Midsummer night
Everyone is sleeping
We go driving into the moonlight

Could be in a dream
Our clothes are on the beach
These prints of our feet
Lead right up to the sea
No one, no one is here
No one, no one is here
We stand in the Atlantic
We become panoramic

We tire of the city
We tire of it all
We long for just that something more

Could be in a dream
Our clothes are on the beach
The prints of our feet
Lead right up to the sea
No one, no one is here
No one, no one is here
We stand in the Atlantic
We become panoramic

The stars are caught in our hair
The stars are on our fingers
A veil of diamond dust
Just reach up and touch it
The sky’s above our heads
The sea’s around our legs
In milky, silky water
We swim further and further

We dive down... We dive down

A diamond night, a diamond sea
and a diamond sky...

We dive deeper and deeper
we dive deeper and deeper
Could be we are here
Could be in a dream
It came up on the horizon
Rising and rising
In a sea of honey, a sky of honey
A sea of honey, a sky of honey

The chorus:
Look at the light, all the time it’s a changing
Look at the light, climbing up the aerial
Bright, white coming alive jumping off of the aerial
All the time it’s a changing, like now...
All the time it’s a changing, like then again...
All the time it’s a changing
And all the dreamers are waking

Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward and Siobhan Fahey formed Bananarama back in 1981. The first single, "Aie A Mwana" sung entirely in Swahilli, unfortunately, stalled at #92 in the UK charts. The follow-up, "It Ain't What You Do", however, became their first proper chart hit when it got to Number 4 in 1982.
Since then, Bananarama have chalked up another 24 Top 40 UK hits, including the worldwide dance-pop smashes

Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters

From 1974 Robert Calvert's concept album
Captain Lockheed & The Starfighters.
Which is such a great album
could only find two tracks on youtube
plus a track i have on a various artists cd
(when i get round to converting my vynil
to digital will add some more)

This concept album deals with the tragedy that occurred when American made Lockheed Starfighter jets were purchased in the sixties by the West German Air Force in a supreme act of folly. The Starfighter was “…originally used by the U.S. Air Force as a light, single seater, fair weather fighter [that the German Defense Ministry had hastily converted into] heavy duty, atom bombers. It was these severe structural modifications which rendered the jet unstable and difficult to control.”

Mark Gane formed the band in 1977 with fellow Ontario College of Art (O.C.A.) student, David Miller. David and Mark had known each other since 1975, and shared an interest in art and music. By Halloween 1977, Martha and the Muffins were ready to perform their first gig, at the O.C.A. The line-up was complete with Mark, Martha Johnson (vocals, keyboards), Andy Haas (saxophone), Carl Finkle (bass), Tim Gane (drums), and Martha Ladly (vocals, keyboards, trombone). Their early gigs included covers (such as The Beatles' "Day Tripper") and early Muffins classics such as "Insect Love," "Suburban Dream," and "Echo Beach."

They released an independent single (early versions of "Insect Love" and "Suburban Dream") in 1979, but it was an impressed Interview Magazine writer, Glen O'Brien, who played their demo tape to Virgin Records, which earned them their international deal.

Recorded in England with producer Mike Howlett, Martha and the Muffins debut album, Metro Music was released in 1980, and "Echo Beach" was soon released as a single. The rest is, as they say, history. "Echo Beach" became a worldwide hit, and perhaps their signature tune. No one was more surprised with the immense success of "Echo Beach", than was the band.

Gane and Johnson (now a couple) announced that while they wanted to continue as a recording act, they also wanted to branch out in new directions by using new collaborators. In essence, Gane and Johnson decided that "M + M" was now Martha + Mark, along with a bevy of studio musicians and hired sidemen.
Whatever their group name, the Mystery Walk album gave M + M/Martha and the Muffins their biggest hit in years with "Black Stations/White Stations", an anti-racist anthem whose first verse took radio stations to task for refusing to play a song about mixed-race romance, a story which Martha Johnson had heard related on the radio while driving in her car.

In one guise or another, Midge Ure has graced our music scene for more than 20 years. Stumble, Salvation, Slik, Rich Kids, Misfits, Thin Lizzy, Visage and Ultravox have all benefitted from his natural musical prowess.

As well as successfully carving out his own solo career (which is what we find him concentrating on today), he has also managed to find the time to undertake a considerable amount of production and video work for other bands/musicians. You may also care to recall that he was highly instrumental in the organising of the acclaimed Band Aid and Prince's Trust projects.

With Billy Bragg's wonderful song, including a new verse written specially for this release because Kirsty thought the original song was too short. Bragg actually wrote two extra verses but Kirsty combined them into one to score her biggest solo chart hit.

After Kirsty's death Billy started to play the song with the extra verse, having always previously stuck to his original form.

welsh band singing about liverpool

The 1980s was a pretty dry decade for Welsh rock music, all told. But an oasis came in the shape of The Alarm, one of the most internationally successful bands ever to have come out of Wales.
Comparisons between The Alarm and U2 have long been bandied around, and in truth there was a lot of similarity in the two groups at the time: melodic rock, social awareness and bad fashion. But the music was always the main focus, and it gave the band a strong, loyal fanbase throughout the 80s and beyond.

The Alarm - Spirit of 76 (Full Version)

Well I find myself in reverie
'Bout what we might have had
And what might have been
We had something going once
That was such a long, long time ago
It was way back in '76
Our friendship formed of pure innocence
We first met in Mathew Street
Where we heard something that would set us free
A sign stands over a door, it says
"Four lads who shook the world"
In the depths of those heady nights
We would dream of those bright lights
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

And my friend John, he went away
He made some mistakes
Spent time in Walton jail
And now when I see him we still talk
But there's no light shining in his eyes
And Susie, she was seventeen
And more beauty in this world
I swear you'll never see
I was gonna be king
And she was gonna be queen
But now all she does is hide behind the tears
If there was more sense in this world
And work wasn't so hard to find
You would not be going your way
I would not be going mine
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

Somewhere tonight out on the street
Somewhere beneath this city's heat
In the eyes of strangers who pass me by
Life is cruel and so unkind
Oh, Oh the SPIRIT OF '76

And Pete has seen his dreams come true
But that don't make him no hero
He's just one of the lucky few
If a man can't change the world these days
I still believe a man can change his own destiny
But the price is high that has got to be paid
For everyone who survives there are many who fail
I've seen my friends caught out in that crossfire

All their dreams and hopes smashed on the funeral pyre
I will never give in until the day I die
Get myself some independence
Carve out a future with my two bare hands
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

Somewhere tonight out on the street
Somewhere beneath this city's heat
In the eyes of strangers who pass me by
Life is cruel and so unkind
Oh, Oh the SPIRIT OF '76

Mersey lights shine in the distance
Same as they did for us then
Mersey lights shine bright in the distance
Where are you now my friend?

You see some nights when I can't sleep
I still think of you

And all the promises, all our dreams we shared
I know those lights still call to you
I can hear them now
I can hear them now

(Still shining for us)
(Let em shine)

(Can you hear them)
(Can you hear them)

(Lights are still shining)

Somewhere tonight out on the street
Somewhere beneath this city's heat
In the eyes of strangers who pass me by
Life is cruel and so unkind
Oh- Oh
Where's it gone
The SPIRIT OF '76

it will never catch on.....happy 25th birthday

From the BBC

The first compact disc was produced exactly 25 years ago in a factory in Germany after years of development by Philips and Sony. We take a look at the humble disc's history and how it shaped the music landscape.

The compact disc project was launched following Philips' failure with its video disc technology in 1978.

The video disc was one of the first commercial products to take advantage of laser technology that could read information from a disc without any physical contact.

The CD is unveiled to the world in March 1979
Research into the video disc began as far back as 1969, and itself was inspired by Italian Antonio Rubbiani, who had demonstrated a rudimentary video disc system 12 years earlier.

In 1970 Philips began work on what was called the ALP (audio long play) - an audio disc system to rival vinyl records, but using laser technology.

Lou Ottens, technical director of the audio division at Philips, was the first to suggest that the ALP be made smaller than the dominant vinyl format and should aim for one hour of music.
In 1977 Philips began to take the development of a new audio format much more seriously. A new name for the product was discussed and names considered included Mini Rack, MiniDisc, and Compact Rack.

The team settled on Compact Disc because it was felt it would remind people of the success of the Compact Cassette.

In March 1979 Philips conducted a press conference to show off the audio quality of its CD system in production and also to impress upon rivals how well it was progressing.
A week later Philips travelled to Japan after the Japanese Ministry of Industry and Technology (MITI) had decided to convene a conference to discuss how the industry could create a standard for the audio disc. The company left Japan having agreed a deal with Sony.

Philips' plan for a CD with a 11.5cm diameter had to be changed when Sony insisted that a disc must hold all of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
The longest recording of the symphony in record label Polygram's archive was 74 minutes and so the CD size was increased to 12cm diameter to accommodate the extra data.

In 1980 Philips and Sony produced their Red Book, which laid down all the standards for compact discs. From that time on the companies worked separately on their own CD equipment but in the early days agreed to share components.

In April 1982 Philips showed off a production CD player for the first time. "From now on, the conventional record player is obsolete," said Lou Ottens.

The first commercial CDs pressed were The Visitors by Abba and a recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss.

US record labels were initially very sceptical about the CD. A year after launch there were 1,000 different titles available.

In 1985 Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms became the first CD to sell more than one million copies. It is still the world's most successful CD album.

In 2000 global sales of CD albums peaked at 2.455 billion. In 2006 that figure was down to 1.755 billion.

Philips first CD player cost more than £1,000 in today's money

The Pukka Orchestra (a Hindu term meaning "first rate", "permanent", "genuine") was formed in Toronto during 1979 by Neil Chapman (guitar) Tony Duggan-Smith (guitar) Graeme Williamson (vocals) and released a humorous independent single "Rubber Girl" in 1981.

They signed to Solid Gold Records shortly after with their self-titled debut in 1984 and featured the radio hit "Listen To The Radio" which was written by Tom Robinson and Peter Gabriel under its original title "Atmospherics". They also had two other chart hits "Might As Well Be On Mars" and "Cherry Beach Express"

Beware of the Toronto Police Department: Cherry Beach Express is a song about the notorious 52 Division of the Toronto Police force. They have long been believed to routinely take prisoners and suspects to a deserted, industrial waste land called Cherry Beach and beat the crap out of them. There was at least one major law suit where a Cherry Beach Express victim was awared a six figure settlement against the Toronto goons who took him on the Cherry Beach Express.
The Toronto Police force has also had a steady stream of corruption problems, accusations and officers charged for various criminal offences. The force has serious ethical and criminal problems and needs to be cleaned out from top to bottom.

Following are the lyrics to a song about the practice which got a lot of airplay on Toronto radio in 1984. Needless to say the Police tried to ban the song. One wonders how many members of the Pukka Orchestra ended up riding the Cherry Beach Express.

Police in Saskatchewan have been dumping undesireables in mid winter out side town where they can freeze to death. No doubt other police forces have their own versions of the Cherry Beach Express.

Is this is a factor in the huge number of false convictions occurring in Canada?
Cherry Beach Express
Pukka Orchestra
I've got a bone to pick with you
not so friendly boys in blue
you come out of the station
and into the street
and everybody beats
a hasty retreat
Well it was late one Friday
I'm a little bit wrecked
you're on your way to serve and protect
you buzz out of a cruiser
like bees from a hive
and ask me if I want to
go for a drive
go for a drive?
That's why I'm riding on
the Cherry Beach Express
my ribs are broken
and my face is in a mess
and I made all my statements
under duress
52 Division
handcuffed to a chair
I'm joining the lineup
to fall down the stairs
I tell you I'm innocent
I try to explain
we're just making sure
you don't do it again
do what again?
That's why you're riding on
the Cherry Beach Express
your ribs are broken
and your face is in a mess
and we strongly suggest you confess!
I confess I'm mystified
by the way you're occupied
I confess I'm horrified
why are you so terrified?
does the pain get any less
if I confess
