Nada Surf's "Lucky" is an explosion of awesome

I don't want to be too specific to ruin the album for anyone who hasn't had a listen yet. So here's my vague, rambling, inexpert review of Nada Surf's "Lucky."

Anyone who hasn't at least heard "See These Bones" or "I Like What You Say," what have you been doing?? Check them out on their myspace.

"Ice On The Wing" has to be one of my favorites. If I saw that song walking down the street, I would rape the pants off it.
Yes, it's that good.

The album version of "I Like What You Say" is slightly different but equally sexy. I love the weird sounds halfway through it. I'm told it was some switch-flipping fun in the studio. It sounds like a seagull nose-dived under someone's foot, and the person happened to repeatedly step on the seagull's neck. Fun either way, I say!

"The Fox" was an excellent surprise. It's like when you're cruising down the street and some guy walks past holding an old style boom box blasting some song, and you end up dancing your pants off to it. Quite literally - you've ditched your panties and the next thing you know, you have a lifetime's supply of Altoids. Everyone wins!

"Lucky" is like that guy you know who is decidedly a Pimp, and he knows, and you know, and you know he knows you know.
Yea, that works.

The cello/other instrumental accompaniment on the album is an absolute smash. When I first heard I wasn't sure how that would sound, but it more than works. It pretty much slapped the doubts out of my face.

All around, a great job from the guys in Nada Surf. With the Karmic re-release, the new Lucky release, an acoustic performance and a show with The Little Ones coming from Nada Surf within a few months, I am one happy camper.

Kudos to all of them. Keep smushing seagulls or whatever it is that makes your music amazing.

Harps sound pimpin`

I was youtube-ing The Dream of Evan and Chan when I saw, near the bottom, "Harp cover."
Intriguing!
I clicked, and here we are.
I've always wanted to play the harp.
His voice goes perfectly with his harp playing, dipping and rising at the right moments.
It's a different take on the song, and it's amazing.

sound familiar?

Linkin Park has done it again: a new album, "new" songs...
I haven't actually picked up the album, because I expect to hear the same old crap again: something about how Chester Bennington hates himself or that he can't be what he was before.
I've heard "What I've Done" [not my own fault, though - it's inescapable on the radio] and although it sounds just like a snazzy new version of the old stuff with less rap, it still makes me dance.
This sums it up nicely:

It still makes me laugh.

On a different note, Fountains of Wayne has come out with another album too!
Personally, I love these guys. Not only are they great on CD, but amazing live. I still haven't gotten the new CD for them either, but it sounds like it's gonna be great from "Someone to Love".
So they do a little name dropping in the song. And yea, I've even heard them called old fogeys singing the same old quirky lyrics.
I still think they're great.

Any recommendations for other good electronica/techno songs?
Thanks.

fuzz

That's right.
Great site I discovered [with the help of Maldroid - myspace.com/maldroid], fuzz.com Forgot to add earlier, Fuzz is like MOG. But different, kinda. I haven't been on there long, but it seems like MOG mixed with Myspace music.
Check it out.
It's pretty rad.

An older site, can't remember where I've posted this one.
pandora.com
It's a music player, you tell it what you want [artist/song] and it plays it and other similar music on your self-created "stations." Tell it what you like and don't like.
It gets better at giving you similar artists that you'll like the more you use it. [Mine is currently disagreeing with me, not sure if it's my browser or the site. Try it anyway.]

While you're at it, do yourself a favor and check out Of Montreal's video for Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse.
It's the best.

My perpetual craving for French indie/new wave/rock has been satisfied, a little, for now.
With the discovery of Les Anges Gardiens.
Best song: La Sueur.
Anyone know of any other good French bands?

dylan fan? not really.

I'm ashamed to admit, I've never really picked up any Dylan music. So I got "Blonde On Blonde," and I expected it to be amazing, from what I've heard.
I just didn't feel it.
I think I'll have another listen. I skimmed through a lot of the songs.
Any Dylan fans out there, is there any particular album I should listen to?
Thanks.

wake from your sleep

_today we escape._

I made the most amazing discovery last night, around 1:30 AM. I'm awake, so I decided to get some fresh night air. I went to my window, opened it, and took out the screen, hopped out, and walked around the front garden. The moon was pale and the sky was perfectly colored blue and pale purple. The air smells so GREAT at that time of night, it's so good. The weather was perfect - it was a still night, slight breeze, and not at all hot or cold. Just chill.
After I climbed back in, with a number of slugs accompanying me, I sat on the window sill and played my acoustic. It is just incredibly amazingly amazing how great it sounds at night.
I put on Radiohead's OK Computer at full blast in my earphones and it was just .... incredible. I didn't know how much better Radiohead sounds by moonlight.
.....Then someone fell off my roof and I decided it was time to stop hallucinating and go to sleep.

They're playing the Fillmore with Mew in April. YES!

It's so nice out, perfect weather. Makes me want to drive around the city blasting Minus the Bear.

Holy jesus, this song is addicting.
_Music and Lyrics_ was pretty entertaining. The best part was the cheesy 80s pop song. Oh, and Hugh Grant doing the hip move.

around 2 AM and i'm changing channels, accidentally hit the wrong button
and i found a group of all-day music channels, no ads, split into categories like electro, swing, indie rock, etc.
it just plays songs continuously on a black screen, with song info in the corner.
and i just got "Sea Knows When" by Nada Surf back on here, haven't heard it in forever.
and i heard The The's song on that m&m's ad, and can't stop listening to it
and and...and..i'm just really excited.
new music [and finding old music] makes me all tingly.

i love this song, it's sooo good. the drums in the beginning are awesome.
just checked their page, or actually, his page. still just Tommy Walters.
he's working on the next album now. score! more Abandoned Pools for me.

i _love_ the lyrics on here. and on "Lethal Killers." i can completely understand this.

_And I kinda like the idea of not living a life saying, "Well, you better live life in a certain way because then, you know, everything's gonna be great later in heaven." You know, the idea of, like, if this is all we have now, if that idea was just a little bit more embraced, our world could be a little bit better. I just find that a little bit more satisfying, too, if you think like, this is all you have and then you're gonna die. [Laughs] It seems a little bit more like, "Oh, okay, well!" instead of, like, thinking that there's some other life at some other time and you can put things off._
-Tommy Walters
