YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

"That was back when MTV still played music videos."

Posted 11 months ago

So, once again, I'm at the library, but I pretty much finished all the work I have to do and did all the work I will have to do for the next few days, so I'm just surfing youtube for fun. The night started out with High as Fuck, then lead to 2 Girls, 1 Cup Song, and finally wound up with Jive Jones Me Myself and I. Now I'm stuck in a world of old pop songs that I just can't seem to get out of. How did this happen? you may wonder. Well, I shall tell you.

Since I was done with my work, we decided to smoke outside. I got a bit too high. Well, maybe not too high, but too high to function at the library. Anyway, I went to listen to my iPod and I just didn't feel like listening to anything on there! (This happens to me sometimes when I smoke. I want to hear music, but I usually listen to the same few hundred songs on repeat and therefore become bored with them every so often.) Then I remembered back when I was like, 12 or something, there was this song on one of the NOW CDs. I don't remember which one, but I think it was still in the single digits at that time. It was probably NOW 8 or so. Anyway, my favourite song on that CD was Jive Jones' Me Myself and I. The next suggested song was Crazy Town's Butterfly, which, in turn, led me to Sugar Ray's When It's Over.

Now, don't get me wrong, I know that Mark McGrath is a sexy mother fucker, but the sick part is that I remember watching this video around the time it came out. I couldn't have been more than 12, but I remember sitting in front of the television watching one of Sugar Ray's videos and drooling over him then. The weird part? I just realized that he was about 30 when I was 12. That's weird. The other weird part? MTV no longer plays music videos.

I don't understand how shows like Flava of Love wind up on there, but the only place I can find music videos 24/7 (at least through the dorm cable) is on VH1 Classics.

World, this is pathetic.

Before I go and find more awful 90's/00's music to listen to, I'd like to copy down my favourite Smash Mouth lyrics from the 90's.

It ain't no joke, I'd like to buy the world a toke

And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony

And teach the world to snuff the fires and liars

Hey I know it's just a song but it's spice for the recipe

This is a love attack, I know it went but it's back

It's just like any fad-it retracts before impact

In case you couldn't already identify the song, it's Walkin' on the Sun. I think it's funny that I was singing about toking when I was 9 or 10 years old in the car. I had no idea what it meant at the time, but man, I fucking loved this song. Now I have a whole new appreciation.

Conclusion? Remember to get an annual dose of music from those time periods you think you'd rather forget about. You might like it more than you think.
