BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

So, my computer ran out of hard disk space and that means no more new music. I'm going home for Thanksgiving next week and my dad said he'd help me install more but I'm worried. He's a pretty tech-savvy guy but still...Should I back up all my music files? Is there any way of doing that without having to burn everything onto CDs? I've acquired most of my music through the Internet so unfortunately, if something bad happens it's all going to be lost. I can't afford one of those external back-up drivers either so any ideas?

I have another request. Does anyone know of songs with my name in the title? I have one by Devotchka and The Cure's "Charlotte Sometimes" but I love my name and I'd like to see it given some glory.

By they way, if you bought one of the new Zunes, you just got pnwed, brother. Yay: Creative Zen Vision! Boo: Zune.

You know who rocks? The Czars. Oh man. Thank you Pandora!

Get an external hard drive! They are the best by far. No installation, just hook 'em up.

But yes, back up everything you can, all the time.

and... night owl? huh.

What I would do is have him add an additional hard drive as a secondary drive, as long as your computer has room (which it should unless its a super small form factor). If you add a second drive he shouldn't have to touch your existing drive, which should lower the risk of losing anything. Then when you get it home you should copy (not cut and paste) your music to the second drive. and after you verify that it copied correctly you can remove the music from the primary (c: drive). From then on you should save everything you care about and don't want to lose on the secondary drive.

As some one mentioned you probably aught to save up and get an external hard drive. They aren't too expensive anymore..and will more then make up for the price later on when your hard drive or computer die and you don't have to spend weeks crying into your pillow over lost music or worse photo's.

The search field at the top of the page is very useful.

What happens if there is some sort of hard drive melt down, wouldn't the second drive be affected as well? I'm debating on the external versus the internal.

Ah. Yes, search form. Well, seeing as I can't even figure out how to back up my files, I'd hate to think what would happen should I get my grimy little paws on the search field. Bwahaha.

well...I would recommend both. having a second hard drive in your machine allows you to save all the important stuff on the second drive so that if windows dies your data is still on your second hard drive. This allows you too format the main drive without touching your data on the second drive. Which is a really good thing : P

So basically having a second drive is your first line of defense against lost data. Your second line is having something to backup all your data too. The easiest option is going to be an external hard drive.

I backup my data drive about once a month. I also have more then one computer on my network so my really important data ( pictures and such) gets backed up to the network as soon as its on my computer.

So basically it all comes down to backing up.

That's true. I'll have to research some quality brands. I might end up going with a zip drive for now, 'cause I'm broke. Thanks for your help though. I'm a total noob.
