OK to Be You and Me

Posted over 5 years ago
Q magazine recently did a poll of "uncool records that are OK to love." (Find coverage by the BBC "here":http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5237492.stm) The top 10 list is somewhat predictable, but has an old fave from my childhood -- it was an oddball record considering my parent's collection.Consider it a nice complement to the other "guilty pleasures" thread, which I can't find right now...

  1. eshep says i keep reading more and more lately about 'guilty pleasure' music. people confessing here and there to secretly liking a certain song. and more often than not, they are admitting to secretly liking a song that other hipsters have dubbed as 'ok to secretly like' - kelly clarkson's 'since u been gone', for example, which has been covered endlessly by a slew of hip artists. i am also seeing an interesting phenomenon re: guilty pleasures that has come about in the age of social networking. with sites like last.fm, mog, and myspace exposing our tastes and our collections to the masses, people are actually MANUFACTURING their musical persona through manipulation of their own listening habits and through deletion (or hiding) of certain guilty pleasures. why must we feel that we have to explain away our 'guilty pleasures'? isn't the true music connoiseur one who can appreciate a wide variety of music for different reasons? one who can find something to enjoy in a wide array of genres? who said that if something appeals to the masses, that it cannot still be good? why must we force ourselves to listen to final fantasy when what we really want to listen to is the new dixie chicks record? it's the folks who listen to nothing BUT dixie chicks and kelly clarkson, etc. that i wonder about. (or the ones who listen only to pitchfork-approved content.) this is in no way a jab to to nicki (or any moggers) - she was only pointing out the phenomenon, which sparked me to rant.

  3. ROCKNROLLPIMP1 says weird list i have *NEVER* listened to anything to be "fashionable" or hip quite the contrary.i listen to things that appeal to something inside heart or the (sub)conscience mind? i have read posts about why we listen to what we do i cannot for the life of me explain why i listen to what i do other than i like it. eh it don't matter to me really. i listen to the dixie chicks and i listen kelly clarkston i can honestly say i have never listened to or liked someting to be kool 90% of my high school friends became my friends because we liked the same stuff we thought we were kool now it's *REALLY* kool to be unkool

  4. Sethpian says Baker Street ROCKS! Its not a guilty pleasure at all. Its an awesome pleasure! There's a reason Mr. Rafferty was born - to write one great song! After all, if it wasn't great, would the Foo Fighters have covered it?

I think the practice of "manufacturing" a musical persona well pre-dates social networking sites; their presence has just exacerbated things and made them more evident. So why attempt to justify why we love the songs we love? Cos, in my experience, most of the outside world is fairly judgmental - quite adolescent, really - and won't easily accept seemingly contradictory choices in music. It's not just about what's cool or uncool...although people would love to give you an opinion about that, too. I don't take people's reaction to my collection personally, but, hell, it can be annoying. Throwing around the term "guilty pleasure" is an attempt to mitigate that. Put it in a category, and hope that people shut the hell up. Cos people are annoying.
