Another Mini Review: Flying Blind...

Artist:
Vashti Bunyan (w/Fern Knight and Vetiver)"Johnny Brenda's":http://www.johnnybrendas.comPhiladelphia, PA03 February 2007I bought a ticket for this show based on Bunyan's reputation alone: I own none of her albums, hardly heard any of her music, and was not terribly interested in the headliner. (Sorry.) Despite all this, I knew it would be right for me to go.A quick scan of the room, with two couples already sitting at tables, made me decide to sit at the bar; it was to the side of the stage, but offered a reasonably clear view. I ordered a Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel and briefly wished I had brought something to read...of course we would be on hippy time. Fortunately, I wasn't impatient for long and struck up a conversation with a neighboring patron; it's good to know I'm not the only person who goes to concerts solo.Perhaps the only thing you need to know about Vashti Bunyan: her singing commands absolute silence in the room. This isn't merely because of her soft, delicate voice. The songs are simply magical, fleeting, and could quiet any hipster. No one dared speak. It may have been the second beer, a stout to be precise...but I clearly imagined that her albums would be perfect for an afternoon lying in bed, naked, with the one you love. Or at least that was the dreamscape I slid into.I left before Vetiver came on. It may have been a mistake by anyone else's account, but I was leaving quite happy and content, hurrying to my car in the terrible cold, hoping for some future Saturday afternoon. The video below is from a different performance, alas.
