The Minimalist Review: The First Emperor

Posted about 5 years ago

I saw "The First Emperor":http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/season/production.aspx?id=8798 as part of the "Met at the Movies":http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events.aspx, and although the production itself is still new and toddling, it's a refreshing entry into the scene. I would love to see future productions grow in depth and see it again in, say, five years. Domingo is still the consummate performer and I felt blessed to see him even on a movie screen, but to hear his Spanish accent over English text in a Chinese opera - too much. But Wu Hsing-Kuo as the Ying-Yang Master and Hao Jiang Tian as General Wang were absolute delights. See it just to discover these two talents.

But this:
Sorry, but I can't stop thinking of Dom DeLuise with a Chinese moustache.Images from Playbill.com

  2. nicki says All right, a real punchline: movie theaters across the country were chuckling as Beverly Sims committed this downright embarrassing faux pas while interviewing Domingo... "So, what you do think about David Beckham bringing hockey to America?"
