All You Need Is Drums

The Secret Machines at the "Theater of Living Arts":http://www.livenation.com/venue/getVenue/venueId/1681, PhiladelphiaAn observation: the band you listen to at home may not be the band you see live.Could there be a greater divide between the two faces of a band than with The Secret Machines? One would expect some difference in sheer volume; most venues are, amazingly, not suited for musical performances, and the answer is always MORE AMPS! (It goes to eleven.) But...The show is all about Josh Garza. Period. Not that this is a bad thing. It transforms the spacey, ethereal tone of their music and makes it amazingly visceral. Of course, much of the detail heard in their albums is lost. But it's still an amazing and curious experience. Someone was kind enough to record a sample:Oh, and I had absolutely nothing clever, appropriately flattering, or enlightening to say when the three gentlemen kindly signed my CD before the show.Still got nothin'. Sorry.

  2. PlaysTheTart says I was standing right next to Josh during the Boston show... and yeah, it truly was all about him! TSM is an incredible live band; I definitely agree with your observation about the difference between them live and recorded... but I think that's what makes a band interesting :)

  3. nicki says I quite agree. Bonus points to them for doing it well. Although one could hear the difference between them in the studio versus the live performance, I personally didn't miss the "other" band. I imagine it's not an easy thing to pull off.

  5. ROCKNROLLPIMP1 says most bands choose to play "sound" different live it really is almost impossible to recreate the stdio sound i have only been to one concert in all my years that sounded like the lp they musta been lip syncing

  6. Angry Bear says My friends and I were at the TLA show as well. In fact, if you look to the left of the speakers behind Ben in the second pic, you can see my friend and me. When we first saw them live a couple of years ago, we were pleasantly surprised at how great they sounded. I can't recommend TSM, either live or in studio, enough.
