Sometimes...You Remember Just How Cool It Is

This is the story of a single that came and went, and was brought back again.
I've been slowly digging myself into Soul Sides' Summer Songs. This in and of itself is hardly notable, but today was the first time that I allowed myself to delete songs from someone else's playlist. (Yes, I like to fancy myself an open-minded person, but no soul backing track is going to make me want to listen to Lil' Wayne. I don't care how much you like it.) This post is about the song that made the cut.

Yes, it had another soul-flavored backing track. I get that. But the lyrics had -- wit. Character. I actually wanted to listen to them.
"Well," I thought, "I might be able to stand an entire album of this. Could even enjoy it." Could even see myself in that stream of consciousness, taking it in with a cold beer in Clark Park. So I looked Little Jackie up.
I should have known.
See, I don't have many singles in my cassette or CD collection. There have been plenty of times when I realized I should have bought the single instead of the full album, but that's another matter. One of those singles was by the same performer.
I'm gonna drink my whiskey
I'm gonna have my man
I know you got nothing to say
I'm gonna have my man
I'm gonna steal their hearts
and save them for another day
Ain't gonna hang my hat
Ain't gonna take off my boots
Ain't nothing gonna stop me in my pursuit
My stage, time to rehearse
Gonna see all the wonders of the universe
Why, hello again, Imani.
This current incarnation is Little Jackie, a project with DJ/programmer Adam Pallin. The Stoop is being put out by S-Curve and promoted by viral marketing company Nabbr. "Being on S-Curve is going to ensure that my face is all over the Internet like a disease," she says. "I've been on the side a lot for the past couple of years, and you get kind of used to it. It's going to be nice to get back to the center."
But it gets better. See, she's been touring with... wait for it... Peeping Tom. And her most recent solo studio album was put out by Ipecac.
Well. Should've bought the entire damned album.

i haven't heard of her before...at least not under the moniker Little Jackie. i like it! the soul blog you link to was just as appreciated.
Ipecac you say? My curiosity is piqued. Sounds pretty cool. I like the idea of a song being called 28 Butts.
Jesus V Santa
there is something South Park should tackle.
