BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(9)

Why, yes, it's another glorious day in Philadelphia and, yes, I'm still in my apartment, now tapping away the iMac rather than merely staring at it. I had resolved to listen to some fresh tunes while reading my usual morning news and feeds. Then I decided I couldn't possibly pack up my projects and head out the door to grab lunch without finishing up Fufu Stew's AntiDivas No.8 mix when... whaa?

"Give it to me Don't stop Give it to me Please don't stop"

Hruh? Basically the only other lyric is "you gave me soul." So that's what they were calling it back in the day?

This track, which got an understated but special mention by Vinnie, was recorded by Andrea Davis... who sounds like she's stepped into your soul kitchen right out of a hentai movie. Unbelievably more direct than the Betty Davis track earlier in the mix.

So? Andrea. Get this: she's Minnie Riperton.

Yeah! I know! What a way to thank your... ahem... mentor. Record a pillowy-soft pr8n tune and take his name for your stage moniker. Yowza.

(Interestingly, that "mentor," Billy Davis, would go on to write many of Coca-Cola's most recognizable jingles, including "I'd Like to Teach the World.")

Clocks in at only 2:22, and suddenly I'm still not ready to go outside.

But if you prefer a tamer picture:

The proprietor of Fufu Stew was kind enough to post on my LiveJournal:

I read your entry regarding my latest podcast. Please allow me to state for the record that here in the Fufu Stew kitchen, we hold the late great Minnie Riperton in the highest of regard. I'd like to invite you to have a look at this tribute I did for her 60th birthday... (http://fufustew.wordpress.com/2007/11/07/antidivas-no-5-a-birthday-celebration-of-extreme-importance-and-a-loving-tribute/) I think you'll enjoy it.

Peace and blessings, Vincent the Soul Chef

Nice and soulful. I always think of Minnie when I see her daughter Maya Rudolph of "SNL" fame sing. And when Maya makes me laugh, it's like Minnie tickled me from the beyond.

What an arousing write-up. My curiosity was pleasantly pricked... Ms Davis/Ripperton's voice manages to marry body and soul in the most torrid way.
