WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

What's Your Favorite Colour, Baby?

Autograph Awesomeness: Living Colour

You know, it is difficult to describe what a band or album may mean to you without sounding like an absolute stalker. So when we got the chance to meet Living Colour after their show at the World Cafe Live, the best I could squeak out to Mr. Calhoun was how thrilled I was that I had the opportunity to finally see them live. (He seemed to appreciate it.) And I mumbled to Vernon Reid that he's "sick." You know, as in the guitar playing. Cos he is.

And that was that. Well, other than the fact that I'm all sorts of gushing today.

It started with all sorts of nervous willies when they came on stage, and came together as JDS and I were walking back to the car: Vivid, released in 1998, coincided with my first tentative steps in creating my own musical taste. It wasn't The Beatles (worthy though they are), CSN (ditto), Glenn Miller, or something from a soft rock radio station. Living Colour was one of the first bands I listened to that my parents didn't listen to. Wow.

Last night, I finally got to see them in the flesh. So, yes, there was more than musical appreciation going on. It was one of the few parts of my youth that I could not only revisit, but embrace. Considering the amount of shite that has surrounded my life, that is saying quite a bit.

Oh, the concert? Spot on. You already know Vernon is sick. Corey still has it, and how. Calhoun is easily becoming one of my favorite drummers. And Doug Wimbish did a bass solo that's a must-see for any female. Ahem.

I'll be processing this night for many weeks to come.
