WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Summer Lovin' The Monkees

Posted over 3 years ago
Today, "BBC 6 Music":http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/steve_lamacq/ is featuring "the first summer of love" with music from 1967 and they're pretty heavy with The Monkees (and The Four Tops). Lamaq thinks that Mickey Dolenz is one of the great underrated rock vocalists of all time. And I started to think about how my relationship with their music is, erm, complicated...Their nickname of "The Pre-Fab Four" is well-known, as are the reasons behind it, so I won't delve too much into it here. But when the show and group was experiencing a resurgance in popularity when I was younger, I couldn't get enough of the show on Nickelodeon. And my parents picked up this cassette for me...

And, of course, as I got older, I got all intellectual and picked up Head and some of Mike Nesmith's work.

Now, I can say I love their music cos it's brilliant pop - and, most of the time, it is - but my image is sullied somewhat by the show. Perhaps I haven't gotten old enough to properly loosen up and enjoy the silliness. Perhaps "Behind the Music" has truly, utterly ruined it for all of us.But, in the end, I think it's time to formally add them to my collection. Again.

  1. Sethpian says Mike Nesmith also made movie "video" called Elephant Parts. its sketch comedy interwoven with his music videos - and this was either just around the beginning of music video popularity or just before. Something worthwhile to check out if you are a Nesmith fan. Its usually in the comedy section of the local video store.

  5. fairportfan says Question for MOGgers in the UK, if you're old enough to remember (or have encountered since the '70s) *The Goodies* - has it ever occurred to you that *The Goodies* is basically an Oxbridge version of *The Monkees*?

  6. fairportfan says And, of course Nesmith created MTV (don't blame him - it was different in his idea) and the Monkees recorded the Very First Hit Song About Viet Nam... And *Ranfy Scouse Git* is about going to a party with the Beatles...
