MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(68)

It's the tremor here that breaks your heart, the shaking but determined voice seeing itself through. There's a plea, but not a desperate one, not desperate, not dramatic, just at once hoping and anticipating the quiet uselessness of hope.

My best friend once slipped this into a hearty playlist of country music, alt- and otherwise, near Lucinda, near Tom Waits. Beside the loud, the angry and the drunk, the Be Good Tanyas lay lower to the ground, somehow sultry in their sweetheart sadness.

See...you have opened the floodgates! I could listen to these girls all night long! But i will post this, and then get to work on the Ohio playlist...hmmm, it may be an EP...not so much in the way of great Ohio music, but I will see what I can put together! I am so jealous...i missed the one and only show they played in Columbus....still bitter about that

I'm glad you're liking it - they're totally addictive. Here's another one of my favorites - possibly just because I love the opening line:

Alright, I was just informed that the ultimate BGT post requires the addition of this song - who am I to argue? Here it is...

Oh ngtiv;. Read your post and listented to the first Be Good Tanyas song.
May I guide you firmly to this. Listen for the tremor that breaks your heart. (It's not easy to miss.)

I did some other Ani DiFranco posts above and below it, but they don't come up on the Mog search because she seems to spell her name like computer software and I didn't tag it right.
I always thought I liked the Be Good Tanyas, but most times I try them I think I don't actually care too much. Think I might like them again and will listen to some more now.

Max - thanks for the Ani tune, I've always intended to listen to more of her. My favorite / most listened track of hers is "You Had Time," which crushes me a little more each time I hear it.

Honestly, I think I got it off the compilation CD from Nick Hornby’s “Songbook.” Apparently it’s on the album “Out of Range”?

Ah. Have got out of range on hard CD but have never got round to playing it all the way through. Will give it some attention.
In another life, this Ani song used to crush me; until I got crushed me into another one. Crush crush.

Was playing some BGT when my girlfriend was round earlier. After I heard this I formulated a plan. Got her to drop me off at the pub on her way home. Had a beer and played this 3 times on the walk back. Check it out.

Max -

1.) This is an awesomely bizarre cover, and those are my favorite kinds.

2.) Now all I want in the world is to get a beer and walk home from a pub with my iPod on repeat.

3.) I'm asking for it: hit me with your soul-crushingest - what's the saddest thing in your library? I've played the ani song a few times now, and it's definitely putting cracks in the foundation. Bring the sad, yo! I need it for #2.

Ooh. A fine line, ngtiv. I think you have to bring the sad to the music. Sad music with no resolution and no investment from the listener is just mawkish. (Bright Eyes, anyone?) I would actually put School Night and The Only One (above) very high on the list.
So, I'd be looking for something that hints at a story; drags you down, wiggles you about a bit, and then drops you off in a new place - a bit sad and maybe a little bit wiser. I have a resilient soul don't mind being taken down by someone I trust to bring me back up. As long as they do it well.
People confuse authentic expression with morose. But maybe they're right. :-)
This floored me, and continues to. Go here first. http://mog.com/Max_Load/blog_post/91770
then come back for this, which might be what you are after:

Love the Be Good Tanya's. I need to invest in more of their stuff. But with 7 of their tracks up here I'm gonna have to just save this page and return whenever I feel. Always been a lovin fan of Ani's so this may be easily one of my favorite post's going on around here. Good Stuff! You all hooked it up..>Thanks
