MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:
Track: Wicked Little Town (Reprise)
(77)

Forget, if you must, that it's a showtune, that it trails characters glittery and bizarre. Ben Kweller strips it of these shiny trappings of birth and leaves you with wide-eyed honesty, all youthful & so sorry:

You'll never find love faster than when you're sharing schemes of prisonbreak; there's no harder fall than learning the escape was never meant for two.

I'll admit here that Stephen Trask's version from "Hedwig" is not only my favorite version of the song, it's one of my favorite songs of all time. And one I'm always hesitant to share. What's that about? Well - here it is, and I've said it: Stephen Trask, and rock showtunes, forever.

Me, too. (What Rawkkiddo said. Except I like some showtunes. Not all of them. Just some. I mean, it's not like I'm into Andrew Lloyd Webber or anything. Can't stand him. But there are a few that I...oh, never mind.)

@ mike - that's how i'd put it, too. for me, things dressed like cats, roller skates on stage, redheaded orphans = no, please god no / rockstar transsexuals, pinball = something i can dig.

but we're all in agreement on kweller.

Some show tunes are wicked when properly revisited. I won't talk about John Coltrane's rendition of "My Favourites Things." A whole life wouldn't be enough to express the genius and invention in his version.

Tommy Gnosis, is that you? NEVER be ashamed for loving the music of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The movie and soundtrack are amazing. I bought my brother a copy of the soundtrack and after a number of days listening to it, he said he really liked it, but felt kinda strange listening to songs from a musical and had to put on some Danzig or The Haunted to toughen up again. ha! Hedwig's version of this song is so lovely also and encapsulates the feeling of living in a crappy town.
