MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Acoustic? Really?

Posted over 2 years ago
I think that my first post on this thing was an AiC post, and now I'm back with some more. I've begun to think that their acoustic stuff (Jar of Flies, Unplugged) is in so many ways superior their more 'grunge' sounding material. If Nutshell doesn't give a little chill...I don't know what's wrong with you. For those of you who care, I actually managed to find a copy of the Jar of Flies cd on ebay for $1 plus a little shipping. A great, if I do say so myself.

  2. lemontwist says Jar Of Flies is the best EP ever made.

  3. River Lethe says Don't forget Sap, the ep that came out between Facelift and Dirt!

  4. lemontwist says In my opinion, Sap is the weakest of all official Alice In Chains releases. Not saying it's bad, just not nearly as good as the rest.

  5. River Lethe says No way, with the exception of that last, joke track, which I could do without. Plus, guest vocals from Heart, Mudhoney and Soundgarden? I like Jar of Flies, but it's a bit too commercial and a bit over-produced. Sap is intimate and more raw, as they hadn't become the phenomenon they would be with Dirt.

  6. lemontwist says Yeah, the Alice Mudgarden is pretty sweet, and I dig the other guest appearances, but that EP just doesn't move me the way their others do. It's undeniably awesome, nothing AIC released ever sucked, I just can't get into it as well as I can get into their other albums.

  7. River Lethe says What do you think of the last, self-titled album? I think there's some excellent stuff, like Godam, but it just doesn't reach the heights (or lows, as in depressing brilliance) of previous stuff. Thoughts?

  8. lemontwist says Alice In Chains is good, it's got some amazing songs like Again and Grind... but I prefer Facelift. Dirt is good but so different compared to the other two full length studio albums, it's superb because it's got a theme, all of the songs tie together really well, and every song fits perfectly. Facelift and Alice In Chains, by comparison, seem like just collections of kickass songs.

  9. kat3260 says I just listened to Jar of Flies on Monday, and there are no words to express my love for that album. "I Stay Away" and "Don't Follow" are great no matter how many times I listen to them. I love the part in "Don't Follow" where Layne belts out "forgot my woman, lost my friends" and the build up to "take me home" ahhhh....must listen now...

  10. lemontwist says Kat, I love singing along to that part. It may just be my number 1 favorite song to sing along to.

  11. kat3260 says yes!!! ditto! I can't control myself when it gets to that part, one of the few songs I'll sing loudly no matter who my audience is

  12. ZZTodd says "Don't Follow" is definitely my favorite song off Jar of Flies, but I love that whole EP. To me it's some really emotional, gripping, and beautiful stuff. Sap is very good as well, but it doesn't quite have the depth that Jar of Flies does. "Brother is my favorite song off that EP. As far as the LP's go, I don't think it's really fair to compare any of them to each other because they are very stylistically different. Facelift is the metal album, Dirt is the grunge album, and Alice In Chains is the hard rock album. You can pretty much use them to see how the band's songwriting changed with time. Tripod is definitely the weakest out of the three, though. Some of the songs on there just aren't really complete. However, the great songs on there make up for them. Just some thoughts from a big fan.

  13. neoprog says I love discussion with people who love music as much as me...you guys have different opinions, but I don't see any name-calling or insults. I love this place. Oh, and Jar of Flies is _easily_ my favorite AiC album, with Dirt right behind. -prog

  14. kat3260 says I love this place too. I couldn't imagine an online community with integrity...until I found MOG :D

  15. River Lethe says Yeah, it doesn't matter if we like different albums more. What matters is we love Alice in Chains. And for the larger MOG community, you can expand that sentiment to music in general.
